Chapter 9 - The Subpoena at Dawn

"You're testifying against the firm?" I stepped closer, my voice dropping into a desperate whisper. "Mariana, if you take the stand as the primary witness for the prosecution against Vance Holdings, you’re exposing yourself to federal scrutiny as well. Your name is tied to the trust that funded the initial corporate registry!"

"My name is clean," Mariana replied calmly, not flinching an inch as I invaded her space. "Every transaction executed through the Vanguard Trust was filed under seal with the Department of Justice’s asset forfeiture division five years ago as part of a cooperative federal informant agreement."

I stopped dead in my tracks, staring at her in absolute disbelief. "Five years ago? You've been working with the DOJ since before my mother even started her medical import scheme?"

"Longer than that," Arthur Sterling added quietly from the side of the room, tapping his titanium tablet to lock the holographic display. "Mrs. Vance has been a designated federal financial liaison since the conclusion of the initial bankruptcy audits. Your mother’s little counterfeit import ring was just the final piece of evidence needed to trigger a nationwide RICO indictment against every corrupt municipal contractor in the state."

Agent Hayes reached into his tactical vest, pulling out a thick, official envelope bearing the crimson seal of the United States District Court, and laid it neatly on top of my desk.

"Julian Vance," Hayes said formally, his tone devoid of any personal malice. "You are formally served with a federal subpoena to appear before the grand jury at 0900 hours tomorrow morning. Failure to appear will result in an immediate bench warrant and revocation of your passport."

I looked from the federal agent to the lawyer, and finally back to my wife. The walls of the office—the very room where I had spent a decade signing contracts and negotiating million-dollar deals—seemed to close in around me, shrinking until there was nowhere left to run.

"And if I appear?" I asked quietly.

"Then you tell the truth," Mariana said, her voice dropping into a register that brook no argument. "You tell the grand jury everything you know about your mother’s supply chain, your sister’s offshore accounts, and your own willful blindness regarding the corporate ledgers."

"And if I don't?"

"Then you spend the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary taking the fall for a crime your mother and sister orchestrated," she answered without a moment's hesitation. "Choose wisely, Julian. For once in your life, make the decision yourself."

Without waiting for another word, Mariana turned on her heel, walking past Arthur Sterling toward the door.

"Where are you going?" I called out, my voice cracking slightly.

"Back to reality," she said over her shoulder, not breaking her stride as she disappeared down the hallway.

Arthur Sterling lingered for a moment, sliding his leather gloves back over his hands. He gave me a brief, cold nod before turning to follow her out of the room.

Agent Hayes remained by the doorway, pocketing his pen as he watched me standing alone in the center of the office.

"You've got twelve hours, Mr. Vance," Hayes said softly before turning and walking out, pulling the heavy mahogany door shut behind him with a dull, hollow click.

Silence reclaimed the room.

I stood in the dim light of the panoramic window, looking down at the empty driveway below where the black sedan had parked just hours earlier. My mother and sister were locked in a county jail cell. My company was seized by federal trustees. My wife was the star witness in a RICO prosecution. And I was left with a subpoena, a desk full of forged ledgers, and the terrifying realization that I had never truly known the woman I married.

I reached out, my fingers trembling as I picked up the federal subpoena from the desk.

As my thumb brushed the textured crimson seal, my cell phone vibrated violently against the wood, lighting up with an incoming text message from an unknown number:
