Chapter 3 - The Frozen Vaults

The young IT manager stood breathless in the doorway, clutching a tablet against his chest like a shield. His eyes darted nervously between Douglas, Gideon, and me, completely unaware of the domestic storm he had just walked into.
“What are you talking about, locked?” Douglas snarled, turning away from us with a frantic movement and grabbing his desk phone. “That’s impossible! Our primary operating accounts are backed by three separate commercial syndicates!”
“I don't know what to tell you, sir,” the manager stammered, tapping his tablet frantically. “An automated compliance directive flagged a beneficial ownership discrepancy under the original corporate charter from seventeen years ago. The system detected an unverified primary shareholder overriding executive controls. Every ledger, credit line, and payroll account has been frozen pending identity verification.”
Douglas’s hands shook so badly he dropped the phone back onto its cradle with a sharp plastic rattle. He slowly turned back around, his gaze shifting from Gideon to me, the full horror of his situation finally sinking into his bones.
“You did this,” Douglas whispered, his voice cracking with disbelief. “You actually filed an injunction.”
“I didn't file an injunction, Douglas. I simply presented proof of ownership,” I replied smoothly, folding my arms across my chest. “You spent eighteen years convincing me I was invisible, that I was financially illiterate, and that I had nothing to my name. You forgot one basic rule of business: receipts don't disappear just because you pretend they never existed.”
Gideon stepped forward, his expression colder than I had ever seen it. “And as the co-founder and minority shareholder of this enterprise, I am officially seconding Gwen’s motion. Until a forensic audit is completed, you are suspended from all executive duties, effective immediately.”
“You can’t do that!” Douglas roared, slamming his fists down onto the glass desk so hard the coffee mugs rattled. He lunged around the desk, closing the distance between us with a terrifying, predatory look in his eyes. “I am the public face of this company! The board answers to me! Investors trust me! If word gets out that our accounts are frozen, the stock will tank before the bell rings tomorrow morning!”
“Then I suggest you start practicing how to explain corporate fraud to the board,” Gideon retorted, not flinching an inch as Douglas loomed over him.
Before Douglas could explode into another tirade, the frosted glass door swung open again.
This time, it wasn't an employee.
A tall, impeccably dressed woman in a cream-colored designer suit stepped into the office, holding a leather portfolio. She had immaculate blonde hair, sharp features, and an expression of cool, unbothered confidence.
Paige Ellison.
The woman Douglas had chosen to replace me. The woman who apparently thought she was walking into her new kingdom as the CEO’s glamorous new consort.
Paige stopped dead in her tracks, her smile instantly vanishing as she looked at the tense scene in front of her. Her eyes flicked from Douglas’s pale, sweat-beaded face to Gideon, and finally landed on me standing calmly by the desk.
“Douglas?” Paige asked, her voice dropping into a sharp, nervous octave. “What is going on here? Why are security guards downstairs talking about a system-wide account freeze? I have investors waiting in the boardroom for the Q3 merger sign-off!”
Douglas whipped his head around, looking at Paige like a drowning man grasping at a floating straw. “Paige! Thank god—listen, there’s a temporary administrative glitch with the banks—tell the board we’re handling it, just stall them for an hour—”
“Stall them?” Paige interrupted, her professional polish cracking completely as panic flared in her eyes. “Douglas, the Q3 merger involves forty million dollars in private equity! If the accounts are frozen, the deal falls apart, and my name is attached to every single disclosure document!”
I couldn't help it. A quiet, dry laugh escaped my lips.
Paige whipped her head around, glaring at me with undisguised venom. “And who are you laughing at? What is this pathetic little circus?”
“Paige,” I said, stepping forward with a calm, chilling composure that made her take an involuntary step back. “Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Gwen Palmer. Or, more accurately, Gwen Lane—the woman whose money built the very floors you’re standing on. And as the majority owner of this company, I am officially canceling your merger meeting.”
Paige stared at me in stunned silence, her mouth slightly open, before slowly turning her gaze back toward Douglas with a look of absolute betrayal. “You told me she was a penniless housewife who didn't even know what a stock portfolio looked like.”
“She lied,” Douglas muttered desperately, grabbing at Paige’s arm. “Paige, listen to me, we can fix this—”
“Don't touch me,” she hissed, pulling her arm away with a violent jerk. She slammed her leather portfolio down onto the nearest chair, turned on her heel, and stormed out of the office, muttering curses under her breath.
Douglas stood alone in the center of the room, his empire crumbling around him in real-time. He looked smaller, older, and entirely defeated.

“It’s over, Douglas,” Gideon said quietly, turning toward the door. “Pack your things. Security will escort you out of the building in ten minutes.”
