Chapter 10 - The Subterranean Breach

The air inside the abandoned steam tunnel was thick with the scent of damp earth, rusted iron, and decades of stagnant water. Our heavy combat boots crunched quietly over gravel and discarded debris as our tactical flashlights cut amber cones through the impenetrable darkness.
"Fifty yards ahead," Cole whispered over the short-range comms, holding up a closed fist to halt our advance. "There’s a maintenance ladder leading directly up into the sub-basement server room of Saint Aurelia. According to the thermal feed, there are only two guards stationed outside the vault door."
I checked the suppressor on my rifle, my breathing steady and controlled. The adrenaline singing through my veins was cold and focused. "Any sign of Julian Vance or Marcus?"
"Negative," Cole replied, scanning his handheld tablet. "They're holding a board meeting on the top floor to ratify the asset transfer. They think they’ve already won."
"Then let's ruin their afternoon meeting," I said.
We advanced in synchronized silence, reaching the rusted iron ladder that ascended vertically into the concrete ceiling. Cole signaled for me to take point. I gripped the rungs, pulled myself upward, and pushed gently against the heavy steel maintenance hatch at the top.
It swung open with a faint, oiled squeak.
I popped my head through the opening, the hum of massive server racks and cooling fans washing over me in a wave of dry air. The room was vast, lined with rows of blinking black server towers humming with raw computational power. Ten feet away, two private security guards in black tactical gear stood leaning against a reinforced steel door, lazily tossing a coin back and forth.
Before either of them could turn their heads, I hoisted myself out of the hatch, raised my rifle, and dropped both guards with two precise, non-lethal compressed-air tranquilizer darts supplied by Cole’s kit. They slumped silently against the floor without a sound.
"Clear," I hissed down into the hatch.
Cole scrambled up beside me in seconds, walking over to the primary control console embedded in the center of the server racks. He pulled a heavy encrypted hard drive from his tactical vest, slamming it into the main diagnostic port.
"I'm accessing the master cryptographic ledger now," Cole said, his fingers flying across the terminal keyboard with blurring speed. Lines of green code cascaded down the black monitor like a digital waterfall.
ACCESSING ROOT DIRECTORY...
WARNING: MULTI-FACTOR ENCRYPTION DETECTED.
INPUT MASTER KEY:
"Come on..." I muttered, watching the cursor blink rhythmically.
"I'm brute-forcing the hash using your father’s legacy protocol," Cole said, sweat beading on his forehead. "It's recognizing the genetic signature from the original 2014 trust... almost there..."
Suddenly, the red alarm klaxons across the entire sub-basement flashed to life, bathing the server room in a frantic, pulsating crimson glow.
BREACH DETECTED IN SECTOR 4.
LOCKDOWN PROTOCOL INITIATED BY REMOTE OVERRIDE.
"They know we're here," Cole snapped, his fingers hammering the final enter key. "Marcus must have had a passive tripwire on the root directory!"
Heavy footsteps thundered down the concrete hallway outside the vault door, accompanied by shouts in Spanish and English as a dozen armed guards rushed toward our position.
"Cole, we're out of time!" I shouted, raising my rifle toward the reinforced doorway as the heavy metal handle began to rattle violently from the outside.
"Hold them off for ten seconds!" Cole yelled back over the deafening wail of the alarm, his eyes locked on the monitor as the progress bar hit ninety-nine percent.
The heavy steel door began to buckle inward under a massive mechanical battering ram from the hallway.
