Chapter 6 - The Breach

The silenced gunshot didn't just rattle the intercom speaker; it shattered the heavy, charged air of the master bedroom.

Damen’s kiss broke instantly. In less than a second, every trace of domestic softness vanished from his face, replaced by the lethal, calculating coldness of a cartel commander under siege. His hand dropped from my cheek, his fingers instantly sliding beneath his left arm to grip the heavy steel handle of his concealed sidearm.

"Stay by the load-bearing pillar in the bathroom," Damen commanded, his voice dropping into an absolute, razor-sharp register.

"Damen, what—"

"Stay!" he barked, shoving me backward toward the inner sanctuary before I could finish the sentence.

He didn't wait for compliance. He pivoted toward the master bedroom door, pulling a small, encrypted tactical tablet from the bedside console. On the screen, a multi-quadrant security feed flickered into life. The ground-floor security foyer showed a cloud of white smoke drifting past the heavy steel optics of the perimeter camera, followed by the dark, tactical silhouettes of three heavily armed men moving past the collapsed inner checkpoint.

They weren't local street thugs. They wore unmarked Kevlar vests, night-vision mounts, and suppressed automatic submachine guns—professionals who moved with terrifying synchronization.

"Vanguard tactical," Damen muttered darkly, his thumb hitting an internal circuit switch. "They found the secondary estate."

Before he could cross the room to the hallway, the intercom system buzzed violently again. A harsh, distorted voice crackled through the speaker, echoing off the mahogany walls.

“Moretti. We know she’s inside. Send Elena out through the garage service bay in thirty seconds, or we take the elevator shaft up and put a round through every reinforced wall you’ve got.”

Damen didn't flinch. His winter-gray eyes narrowed into slits of pure ice.

He keyed the transmission open, his voice steady, low, and terrifyingly calm.

"You're welcome to try coming up, boys," Damen replied smoothly. "Just make sure your health insurance covers a closed-casket funeral."

He tossed the tablet onto the bed, chambered a round into his pistol with a crisp, metallic snap, and stalked out into the dark hallway, leaving me alone in the shadows of the master bathroom as the sound of boots began pounding up the private service stairs.
