Chapter 6 - The Arrest of Innocence

The flashing red and blue strobes of the Malibu police cruisers painted jagged arcs across the white stucco walls of my living room, slicing through the midnight gloom.

Officer Miller stood by the front door, his hand resting near his holster as the handcuffed burglar was half-pushed, half-guided out toward the patrol car. The man kept his head ducked low, muttering frantic curses about Jessica under his breath. On the floor near the oak secretary desk, the discarded digital bypass tool and the forged bankruptcy filing lay neatly within a yellow plastic evidence marker.

"Well, Mrs. Hale," Officer Miller said, turning back to me with a clipboard in hand. "We’ve got him on felony second-degree burglary, and based on the documents he was trying to plant, we’re expanding the warrant to include conspiracy to commit fraud and forgery. We're going to need a formal statement regarding Mrs. Jessica Hale's involvement."

"You'll have it by morning," I said, my voice steady, though my pulse thrummed with a cold, relentless energy. "The phone text message he mentioned—the one threatening me—is saved on my mobile device, along with the automated logs from my security cameras showing his entry angle."

Officer Miller nodded respectfully. "Understood. We'll pick her and your son up for questioning within the hour."

As the cruisers reversed out of the driveway, their sirens silent but lights still spinning, the heavy front door clicked shut. I stood alone in the quiet den, the scent of ozone and spilled coffee hanging in the air.

My phone buzzed again violently against the wooden table.

It wasn't a text this time. It was a direct voice call from Daniel.

I let it ring three times, listening to the shrill electronic chime bounce off the high ceilings, before sliding my thumb across the screen and pressing it to my ear.

"Mom! What the hell is going on?" Daniel’s voice exploded through the speaker, frantic, high-pitched, and laced with genuine panic. "Two squad cars just pulled up outside our rental in Santa Monica! They’re banging on the door! They're saying Jessica is being detained for an attempted break-in at your house!"

"She didn't attempt a break-in, Daniel," I said calmly, my words dropping into the receiver like stones in a well. "She hired a professional criminal to plant forged bankruptcy documents in my study at two in the morning. And he's currently cooperating with the Malibu Police Department."

A terrifying, suffocating silence stretched over the line.

"That... that's impossible," Daniel stammered, his voice cracking. "Jessica wouldn't... she told me those papers were just legal safeguards for the LLC. Mom, you can't let them arrest her! She's my wife! This will ruin everything—her career, our standing in the community, our entire future!"

"Your wife tried to steal my home, Daniel," I replied, my voice chillingly level. "And you threatened me with smear campaigns via text message less than ten minutes ago. I suggest you call a very good criminal defense attorney. Because unlike the curtains you ruined or the rosebushes you tore up, a federal forgery charge doesn't wash out with an apology."

Before he could scream another word, I hung up the phone and switched it off completely.
