Chapter 8 - The Stairwell Ambush

"Down!" Thomas barked, shoving Caleb behind the heavy iron frame of the records vault door while drawing his weapon in a single, fluid motion.

I dropped to one knee, pulling my compact service pistol from my hip holster, my thumb flicking off the safety with a sharp click. The air in the basement suddenly felt thin, charged with the imminent violence of men cornered in a concrete box.

Footsteps descended the stairs—slow, heavy, and deliberate. Not the hurried rush of patrolmen responding to an alarm, but the measured, professional cadence of tactical operatives.

"Chief Vance!" a voice called out from the dark corridor, flat and amplified slightly by a tactical comms unit. "We know you're in the vault. Drop the tape and walk out with your hands visible, and no one else in this room gets hurt."

It wasn't Miller’s voice. It was colder, professional—mercenary.

"That’s a hard pass!" Thomas shouted back, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. "Identify yourselves or take a bullet!"

Instead of an answer, a blinding flashbang grenade came skidding around the corner of the corridor, spinning across the tile floor toward the open vault door.

"Grenade!" I screamed.

I threw myself flat against the floor behind a heavy oak filing cabinet, tucking my head and covering my ears.

CRACK-FLASH!

The explosion tore through the basement with ear-splitting violence, filling the small space with blinding white light and thick, acrid smoke. The concussion rattled my teeth and sent a shower of plaster dust raining down from the ceiling.

Before the ringing in my ears could even begin to fade, the heavy tactical boots surged forward into the room.

"Clear!" a voice barked through the smoke.

I didn't wait for them to reach the vault. Rolling out from behind the filing cabinet, I raised my pistol and fired two shots low into the concrete floor right in front of the advancing boots, sending sparks flying and stopping the lead operative dead in his tracks.

Thomas followed up instantly, firing a suppressive burst over the top of the server rack that forced the second gunman to dive behind a concrete pillar.

"Caleb! Out the emergency coal chute!" I yelled through the smoke, grabbing the boy by his jacket collar and shoving him toward the narrow, cobweb-filled metal hatch near the ceiling that led out to the alleyway behind the precinct.

"I'm not leaving you!" Caleb coughed, swatting away the smoke.

"Go, Stone! That's an order!" Thomas bellowed, covering the hatch with his weapon.

Caleb scrambled up the metal rungs like a spider, pushing the rusted exterior grate open and tumbling out into the night air just as a burst of suppressed gunfire chewed up the drywall inches from his head.

"We're flanked, El!" Thomas yelled, firing another round down the corridor. "They brought a full tactical squad. Miller didn't just sell us out—he handed the keys of the entire precinct to Dubois's private army!"
