Chapter 4 - The Bride’s Ledger

The private security office on the hospital’s lower level had been converted into an impromptu command center.
Monitors flickered with encrypted data feeds, intercepted phone transcripts, and satellite tracking logs. Arthur stood in front of the main screen, his arms crossed over his chest, staring at a financial wire transfer document that had just been pulled from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.
“Read it to me again, Leo,” Arthur said, his voice dangerously low.
Leo adjusted his glasses, scanning the digital tablet. “Two weeks after you broke off contact with Chloe and proposed to Vivien, she opened a private holding account under a maiden alias. Three days ago, four hundred thousand dollars was transferred from that account to an independent courier agency in downtown Chicago—the exact agency that dispatched the poisoned wine to Henderson’s Diner.”
Arthur’s gaze locked onto the signature at the bottom of the wire transfer authorization form.
Vivien Croft.
“She knew about Chloe from the beginning,” Arthur realized aloud, the pieces clicking together with terrifying clarity. “She didn't just want a political merger. She knew that as long as Chloe was alive—and especially once she discovered the pregnancy—our marriage would never be secure. She wanted to eliminate both of them in one clean sweep, making it look like an accidental food poisoning or a tragic wedding-day anomaly.”
“And if you had drunk from that cup,” Leo added grimly, “the syndicate would have blamed Malcolm, a turf war would have erupted, and Vivien would have inherited controlling shares of both organizations as your grieving widow.”
A cold, humorless smile touched the corners of Arthur’s mouth. “She thought she was playing chess. She didn't realize she was sitting across from a executioner.”
“What do you want us to do with her?” Leo asked, his hand resting near his holster. “The Croft guards are currently securing the north wing of the cathedral, waiting for her return. We can pick her up quietly before dawn.”
“No,” Arthur said, turning away from the screens. “Not quietly.”
Before Leo could ask for clarification, a sharp tap sounded on the reinforced door of the security office.
A young nurse slipped inside, looking pale and jittery. “Mr. Romano? You need to come upstairs immediately. Mrs.—ah, Miss Henderson woke up. Her heart rate spiked, and she’s trying to discharge herself.”
Arthur didn't hesitate. He bolted out of the room, leaving Leo staring at the open files.
When Arthur pushed open the door to Trauma Room 3, Chloe was already standing by the bedside, her bare feet touching the cold linoleum, struggling to pull her jacket over her shoulders with trembling hands.
“What are you doing?” Arthur demanded, rushing forward to catch her by the elbows before her knees buckled.
“I’m leaving,” she said stubbornly, refusing to look him in the eye. “I am not staying in a hospital wing guarded by armed mobsters while your psychotic fiancée tries to poison me from across town.”
“Chloe, listen to me,” Arthur said, his voice firm as he gently guided her back down onto the edge of the mattress. “You are not leaving this hospital. It is the most heavily fortified location in the city right now.”
“I have a diner to run, Arthur! My brother Toby is upstairs in the apartment, probably wondering why I haven't answered my phone, and—”
“Toby is fine,” Arthur interrupted, cupping her face with both hands, forcing her to look at him. Her green eyes were flashing with defiance and exhaustion. “I already had Leo dispatch a secure tactical team to bring him and his entire apartment block into our primary safehouse an hour ago. They’re safe.”
Chloe froze, her breath catching in her throat. “You... you moved Toby?”
“I’m not letting anyone else get close to the people I care about,” Arthur said, his voice dropping into a fierce, quiet intensity. “Vivien tried to kill you today, Chloe. She funded the hit that put you in this bed.”
Chloe stared at him, the defiance draining out of her, replaced by a cold, sickening horror. “Vivien...”
“She’s done,” Arthur promised, his thumb brushing away a stray tear from her cheek. “By sunrise, the Croft family won't just be broken; they’ll be begging for mercy. But you are going to stay right here, where I can protect you.”
Chloe looked down at his hand, then slowly raised her gaze to meet his. “You think this fixes everything, Arthur? You walk away for seven weeks, you almost marry another woman, and you think you can just lock me in a hospital room and play hero?”

Before Arthur could answer, the room’s intercom system buzzed violently to life, cutting off whatever words he had prepared.
“Boss,” Leo’s voice crackled through the speaker, breathless and laced with immediate urgency. “We’ve got a situation on the perimeter. Malcolm Croft just arrived at the hospital lobby with twenty armed men. He’s not here to talk.”
