Chapter 3 - The Ghost’s Fortune

“That’s... that’s impossible,” I stammered, backing away until the edge of the kitchen counter pressed against my lower back. “Larry lived on the street! He slept in a shelter! I bought him breakfast every single morning!”

Agent Vance stopped walking. He pulled out a handkerchief, adjusted his cuffs, and looked at me with a look of profound, patronizing pity.

“Method acting, my dear,” Vance said smoothly. “When the federal government is hunting you across fifty states with a frozen asset mandate, the best place to hide is right out in the open where no one expects to look. A filthy coat, a cardboard sign, and a cup of black coffee. Brilliant, really. He spent three years blending into the background of this city while the authorities looked everywhere else.”

“Then why did he marry me?” I demanded, my fear momentarily giving way to a surge of white-hot anger. “If he was hiding from the feds, why tie himself to a civilian? Why leave a paper trail that led straight to me?”

Vance’s smile vanished, replaced by a cold, predatory stare.

“Because under federal asset forfeiture laws, embezzled funds hidden in offshore accounts cannot be seized by the government if they are legally transferred to an innocent, unknowing spouse prior to a death ruling,” Vance explained, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. “Larry was dying of liver failure. He knew he couldn't spend the money, and he knew the government was closing in on his final shell corporation. He needed a legal heir. Someone clean. Someone honest. Someone who bought him coffee every morning and wouldn't ask too many questions.”

My breath caught. Forty million dollars.

It wasn't just a marriage certificate. It was a financial Trojan horse.

“I don't want his money,” I said fiercely, grabbing the edges of the kitchen counter. “I didn't know anything about this! Take it back! Annul the marriage! I’ll sign whatever waiver you want!”

“Afraid it doesn't work that way, Mrs. Miller,” Vance replied, stepping right up to the edge of the kitchen. He leaned in close, his voice dropping to a low, chilling register. “Death terminates a marriage, but it seals the estate probate. Legally, the moment Larry’s heart stopped, every single offshore bank account, encrypted crypto wallet, and holding shell tied to his name transferred directly to his surviving spouse. To you.”

He paused, letting the terrifying weight of his words sink in.

“And right now, there are three different intelligence syndicates and a dozen very dangerous men who believe you know the access codes to forty million dollars. Which brings us back to my original question, Sarah: where did Larry hide the flash drive?”

I stared at him, my mind racing a mile a minute. I didn't know anything about a flash drive. But before I could open my mouth to deny it again, a sharp, shattering sound echoed from the living room.

The heavy glass window facing the street had just been blown inward by a high-velocity impact.

Agent Vance spun around instantly, drawing a suppressed sidearm from his shoulder holster with terrifying speed. But before he could raise the weapon, a second muffled pop echoed from the dark alley outside, and Vance staggered backward, dropping his gun as a red stain bloomed rapidly across the chest of his tailored suit.

He collapsed onto my living room floor without a sound.
