Chapter 8 - The Syndicate’s Trap

“Master encryption keys?” I repeated, the phrase feeling foreign and dangerous on my tongue. “Mr. Pendelton, I am a freelance consultant and a residential property owner. I don't have any hard drives.”

“Your father’s old safe-deposit box at the downtown Federal Trust,” Arthur said, his voice urgent and low as he stepped directly into my personal space. “The one Michael spent seventeen years trying to force you to open, telling you it was just old family junk. The physical drive is inside it. And if the syndicate reaches that box before we execute a federal seizure warrant, you won't just lose your assets—you won't live to see sunset.”

Before I could process the sheer, terrifying weight of his words, the sharp screech of tires echoed across the club’s parking loop.

A silver Mercedes SUV came tearing around the corner of the clubhouse at reckless speed, its engine roaring, ignoring the valet cones entirely as it skidded across the gravel and slammed to a halt blocking the exit lane.

The driver’s door flew open, and Michael tumbled out. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket anymore. His tie was ripped open, his face twisted into a mask of pure, unhinged fury and terror. He had clearly escaped out the back service exit of the veranda.

“Susan!” Michael screamed, sprinting across the gravel toward us, his hand reaching aggressively into his coat pocket. “You bitch! What did you tell them? What did you tell Richard?!”

Arthur Pendelton reacted with lightning speed. He shoved me behind his back, his hand flashing under his trench coat to unclip a concealed federal shield and a sidearm.

“Federal agent! Stay back, Mr. Sterling!” Arthur commanded, leveling his gaze at my husband.

Michael stopped dead in his tracks three yards away, his chest heaving, his eyes wide and bloodshot. He didn't look like a successful sixty-year-old corporate executive anymore; he looked cornered, desperate, and lethal.

“You’re federal?” Michael snarled, his voice cracking as he glared at Arthur, before shifting his venomous gaze directly to me. “You called the feds, Susan? You think you’re smart? You think you can ruin my entire life over a dinner table comment?!”

“I didn't call the feds, Michael,” I said steadily from behind Arthur’s shoulder, my voice cold and calm. “They’ve been watching you for years. I was just the blindfold you wore while you robbed me.”

“You stupid, ungrateful bitch!” Michael roared, suddenly pulling a heavy, suppressed automatic pistol from his coat pocket and leveling it straight at my chest.

Arthur drew his firearm instantly, shouting a warning, but Michael’s finger tightened around the trigger with terrifying speed.

Before the first shot could ring out, a deafening roar erupted from the access road behind the club. A massive, unmarked federal tactical van smashed through the decorative wooden perimeter fence, plowing straight across the emerald fairway and slamming directly into the side of Michael’s Mercedes, crushing it like a tin can and cutting off his escape route in a catastrophic explosion of tearing metal and shattered glass.
