Chapter 5 - The Standoff

The interior of the parking garage smelled of exhaust fumes, damp concrete, and old oil.
The fluorescent overhead lights flickered erratically, casting long, fractured shadows across rows of parked sedans and pickup trucks.
At the far end of the garage, near the stairwell entrance, a terrifying scene unfolded under the buzzing light.
Daniel was pushed hard against the side of his own battered pickup truck, his hands raised in surrender, shivering in a thin gray hoodie. Standing directly in front of him was Rocco, his face twisted in a manic, desperate snarl, pressing the cold barrel of a silver pistol directly against my brother’s temple.
And standing ten feet away, completely calm, hands casually resting at his sides in his rolled-up white shirt, was Carmine Moretti.
“Put the gun down, Rocco,” Carmine’s voice cut through the cold air, steady and absolute. “This between you and me. The kid has nothing to do with it.”
“Shut up, Carmine!” Rocco screamed, spittle flying from his lips, his eyes wild and bloodshot. “You think I don't know what you’re doing? You’re trading away our families, our legacy, for a bunch of federal immunity deals! You brought an outsider into the estate, and now you’re throwing me to the wolves?”
“You broke the rules, Rocco,” Carmine replied, his voice dangerously low. “You attacked someone under my roof. And worse, you brought family into a business that doesn't belong to them.”
“She saw the folder!” Rocco shrieked, pressing the pistol harder against Daniel’s temple, making my brother flinch and let out a muffled sob. “She’s a dead girl anyway! Step back, Carmine, or I blow the mechanic’s brains across this concrete right now!”
My blood ran cold. I stepped out from behind a concrete pillar near the entrance, my voice cracking through the garage.
“Let him go!”

Rocco’s head whipped around, his eyes locking onto me with pure venom. A twisted, ugly smile spread across his face.
“Well, well,” Rocco sneered, shifting the aim of the pistol just a fraction of an inch toward the open space between Daniel and me. “Look who crawled out of the basement.”
