Chapter 8 - The Desperate Sibling

Twenty minutes later, the air inside the Sterett’s primary briefing room was cold and sterile.
Brandon sat at the head of the heavy steel table, his usually arrogant posture completely collapsed. His expensive civilian jacket was damp with sea spray, his hair was windswept, and his hands trembled as he gripped a paper cup of water he hadn't touched.
When the heavy hatch clicked open and I walked into the room, Brandon flinched as if I had struck him.
“Sandra,” he breathed, his voice cracking with genuine, unscripted panic. “Thank God. You have to help us. You have to get us off the grid before they find the house.”
I didn't sit down. I remained standing at the opposite end of the table, my hands resting flat against the cold metal surface, looking down at my younger brother with a gaze that had unnerved hardened officers across three continents.
“You chartered an unregistered civilian aircraft to breach a restricted naval zone, Brandon,” I said, my voice perfectly flat. “You violated direct administrative orders, you bypassed base security protocols, and you turned a multi-million-dollar warship into your personal taxi service. You aren't leaving the ship. You’re being transferred directly to the brig for a general court-martial.”
“No! You don't understand!” Brandon stood up so fast his chair screeched against the deck plates. “Dad’s gone.”
The words hung in the sterile air between us, swallowed by the low, distant hum of the ship’s engines.
I didn't blink. “What do you mean, he’s gone?”
“Two men in grey suits showed up at the house an hour after Dad got back from this ship,” Brandon stammered, tears pricking the corners of his eyes—the same tears he used to use to get out of chores when we were kids, but this time they were real. “They didn't knock. They kicked the front door off its hinges. They tore through Dad’s study, pulled the floorboards up, and took the black briefcase from the wall safe.”

“The briefcase containing the Apex Defense corporate ledgers,” I stated quietly.
Brandon froze, his jaw going slack. “How... how do you know about Apex?”
