Chapter 7 - The Blind Exit

My foot slammed hard onto the brake, the sedan’s tires sliding slightly on the slick concrete floor.

The SUV’s high beams clicked on, blinding me instantly. I threw my arm up over my eyes, cursing under my breath. They had already cut off the main exit. If I tried to ram the gate, they would turn us into Swiss cheese before we cleared the ramp.

“Mommy?” Chloe whimpered from the back seat, curled into a tight ball on the floorboards. “What’s happening?”

“Stay down, Chloe! Don't move!” I yelled, shifting the car violently into reverse.

The rear tires squealed against the concrete as I whipped the steering wheel around, spinning the sedan into the dark shadows behind a concrete support pillar. I cut the headlights, plunging us into near-total darkness.

Through the windshield, two armed figures in tactical gear stepped out of the SUV. Their heavy combat boots echoed off the low ceiling as they swept their rifles across the parking stalls, systematically checking each vehicle.

“Clear,” one of them muttered into a shoulder mic. “Target’s vehicle is still in stall twelve. She didn't make it to the street.”

“Check the stairwell access and the service elevator,” a second voice crackled through the comms. “The boss wants the woman and the kid secured before Whitmore bleeds out upstairs.”

My chest seized. Before Whitmore bleeds out.

No. James had stayed behind to buy us time. He had taken bullets for a woman who was supposed to be a nameless, invisible night cleaner.

I gripped the steering wheel so hard my knuckles turned white. I couldn't just run. If I drove out of here alone, James would die on the kitchen floor of his own restaurant, and these men would track us down before dawn.

I glanced down at the center console. Next to the gear shifter sat a small, brushed-steel access panel marked with an engraved Whitmore Group corporate logo. I pressed it. The panel clicked open, revealing a heavy tactical keypad and a red emergency button.

On the screen above the keypad, a blinking prompt read: SUB-LEVEL FREIGHT BYPASS - MANUAL OVERRIDE.

It wasn't just a parking garage. It was a secondary subterranean logistics tunnel built beneath the city grid.

I punched in the only numbers I knew by heart—the day I started working the night shift here, the day James had first looked at me with those guarded, melancholic eyes.

The console beeped twice. A heavy steel section of the back wall—disguised as a concrete structural pillar—slowly slid inward with a deep, mechanical hum, revealing a pitch-black tunnel sloping sharply downward.
