Chapter 10 - Descent Into the Mojave

The twin rotors of the helicopter beat a furious rhythm against the night sky as we climbed rapidly over the San Bernardino mountains, leaving the blazing lights of Camp Pendleton far behind in the Pacific mist.
Inside the dim cabin, the red tactical lighting cast long, skeletal shadows across the faces of the Reaper operators as they checked their gear in silence. The air smelled of gun oil, sweat, and high-altitude ozone.
I pulled the titanium thumb drive from my pocket and slotted it into the interface port of my tactical tablet. A string of encrypted files immediately began scrolling across the screen in cascading green text.
I bypassed the primary firewalls using an old override code—a private childhood cipher that only Elena and I had ever used when we played hide-and-seek in the abandoned tunnels beneath our father’s ranch.
A hidden folder opened.
It wasn't a launch code or a treason manifest. It was a video file, timestamped three hours ago, filmed inside a cold, concrete subterranean bunker illuminated by banks of flickering computer monitors.
The screen flickered. Elena appeared, staring directly into the camera lens. Her hair was shorter, a jagged streak of gray cutting through her dark curls, but her eyes—sharp, brilliant, and terrifyingly calm—were unchanged.
"If you're watching this, little sister," Elena said on the recording, a faint, sad smile touching the corners of her mouth, "it means Alan Vance finally showed you the ledger. He didn't tell you the whole truth, did he? He didn't tell you that Project Ghostwriter wasn't designed to destroy the defense grid... it was designed to wipe out the corrupt core that murdered our father six years ago."

My breath hitched in my throat. The tablet screen trembled in my hands as the helicopter banked hard over the dark, sweeping expanse of the Mojave Desert below.
"The terminal in the silo isn't a launch control," Elena’s voice echoed from the tiny speakers, crystal clear against the roar of the engines. "It’s a confession server. And by the time you land your bird on the pad... I'll already be waiting for you at the bottom of the shaft with the final key."
