Chapter 6 - The Weight of a Shadow

Lieutenant Brandon Carter’s heels clicked sharply against the polished gym floor as he scrambled backward in a blind panic, nearly tripping over the edge of a recruiting display.
The blood had completely drained from his face, leaving him a ghastly, pale shade of gray. He didn't dare drop his eyes from Master Chief Rachel Reed’s unblinking, predatory gaze. For a man who had spent the last two hours basking in the adulation of teenagers and treating the auditorium like his personal stage, standing before an active Master Chief Special Warfare Operator who knew exactly how many regulations he had violated was a waking nightmare.
“Master Chief,” Carter choked out, his voice cracking on the syllable. “I—I was not informed of your presence in the district. Standard protocol dictates—”
“Standard protocol dictates that you verify your operational roster before you mock a service member’s family in an open public forum,” Mom interrupted, her voice entirely flat, devoid of anger yet infinitely more terrifying than a shout.
She didn't raise her volume, but every syllable cut through the cavernous gymnasium with the precision of a scalpel.
Around us, the fifty K9 handlers stood at absolute attention, their powerful German Shepherds silent and completely motionless. The two hundred students in the bleachers sat frozen, watching the humiliation of the charismatic lieutenant unfold with wide, unblinking eyes. The football players who had laughed at me earlier now looked as though they were trying their absolute best to shrink into the metal benches.
Chief Ramirez stepped forward, breaking the heavy tension in the air. “The district briefing has been concluded, Master Chief. The regional public affairs officer has already been notified of the unauthorized breach of protocol regarding classified personnel families.”
Mom gave Ramirez a single, microscopic nod. Then she turned her attention back to Carter, who looked ready to pass out.
“You have twenty minutes to pack your table, Lieutenant,” Mom said quietly. “And if I ever hear of you using a child’s family background as a punchline to entertain a high-school crowd again, you won't have to worry about your next promotion. You’ll be scrubbing bulkheads in the Aleutian Islands.”
Carter swallowed hard, bobbing his head in a frantic, desperate nod. “Yes, Master Chief. Understood, Master Chief.”
Without another word, Mom turned her back on him, shifting her focus entirely to me. Her sharp, calculating eyes softened just a fraction as she looked me up and down, checking for any hidden bruises or stress.
“You ready to go, Mason?” she asked, her voice returning to its normal, steady rhythm.
“Yeah, Mom,” I said, picking up my backpack. “I’m ready.”

Titan gave a sharp, happy bark, leaping forward to lead the way toward the double doors, leaving the silent, stunned gymnasium behind us.
