Chapter 9 - The Disconnected Monitor

"Compromised?!" I roared, shoving past the administrator and sprinting down the hallway like a man possessed, with Detective Vance right on my heels.
We tore around the corner of the third-floor surgical wing, bursting through the double doors into the intensive care unit. The usually quiet, sterile hallway was a scene of controlled chaos. Nurses were shouting, emergency alarms were wailing with a high-pitched, rhythmic shriek, and two security guards were standing outside Room 304, breathing heavily.
I shoved my way past the guards and threw open the door to Claire’s room.
The heavy acrylic smell of ozone and antiseptic hung thick in the air. The room was empty except for the medical staff frantically crowding around the bed. Claire’s pale, unconscious form lay motionless under the white sheets, but the primary heart monitor beside her—the large digital display screen tracking her vitals—was completely dark, its power cord dangling loosely from the wall outlet, having been cleanly ripped from the socket.
"Get the backup generator online! Check her pulse!" a doctor shouted over the blaring alarms, slamming his hands against Claire’s chest to begin manual chest compressions.
"Get out!" a nurse yelled, turning to push Detective Vance and me back toward the door. "You're contaminating the sterile field! Give us room to work!"
Vance flashed his gold shield, grabbing the nurse by the shoulder. "I'm Detective Vance, City PD! Who was in this room? Did anyone see who disconnected the monitor?"
"A man!" the nurse panted, sweat beading on her forehead as she continued pumping an oxygen bag. "Wearing a hospital scrubs uniform and a surgical mask! He walked in right before the alarms went off, claiming he was checking the IV drip! When I turned back around, the machine was offline and he was already bolting down the stairwell toward the emergency exit!"
My blood ran cold. Someone had infiltrated a high-security hospital ward, bypassed the security cameras, and tried to murder my sister while she was lying helpless in a coma.
"Vance," I snarled, turning to face the detective, my hands trembling with a lethal mixture of rage and terror. "That wasn't random. That was professional. Someone wants Claire dead before she wakes up and tells us what she knows."
"Stay here," Vance ordered, drawing his service weapon as he sprinted out of the room toward the emergency stairwell. "Secure the perimeter!"
I didn't stay in the room. I backed out into the hallway, my chest heaving, my mind racing through every possible connection. Why would anyone want Claire dead? What did she know that was so dangerous it warranted a second assassination attempt?
As I stood in the corridor watching the doctors fight desperately to stabilize my sister’s flatlining monitor, my cell phone vibrated sharply in my hand.
I looked down at the screen.
It was a live video stream notification from an unknown, encrypted protocol. I tapped it instinctively.
The video feed opened to a dark, unfamiliar room—a windowless basement or a secluded warehouse somewhere in the city. The camera was propped up on a concrete table, facing a single wooden chair under a swinging overhead bulb.
Tied securely to the chair, gagged with thick black duct tape, and struggling frantically against heavy nylon zip-ties around her wrists was a woman I recognized instantly.
It wasn't Claire. And it wasn't Elena.
It was the live-in nanny we had hired six months ago to help out around the house—Sarah.
Before I could process the image, a pair of black-gloved hands stepped into the frame from behind the chair, yanking the duct tape off Sarah’s mouth.
Sarah screamed, sobbing hysterically as she stared straight into the camera lens. "Please! I don't know anything! Marc, if you're watching this, help me! They said if you don't bring them the digital drive by midnight, they're going to kill me!"
The screen flickered black, and a single text message appeared underneath the video file:

“You have the footage, Marc. Bring the original cloud backup drive to the abandoned shipping yards at Pier 4 by midnight. Come alone. If you tell the police... Sarah dies first. And Lily is next.”
