Chapter 9 - The Hostage in the Snow

"Miller!" I screamed, my voice cracking with pure terror as I watched the elderly man lie motionless on the floor.
"Stay down!" Richard yelled, throwing himself over my back to shield both Eli and me from the line of fire, his breathing ragged and frantic.
The scarred man walked slowly down the center aisle of the ballroom, his heavy boots clicking rhythmically against the glass-strewn floor. He ignored Grant, who was cowering near the bar, and walked straight up to Thomas, grabbing him roughly by the collar of his expensive tuxedo and hauling him to his feet.
"Please!" Thomas sobbed, his bravado entirely gone, tears streaming down his face. "I gave you the accounts! I gave you the access codes! Why are you doing this?"
"Because you talked too much, Thomas," the scarred man said coldly, pressing the muzzle of the suppressed pistol right against Thomas’s temple. "And because your corporate friends are messy. We needed the Vance trust liquidated and funneled into our offshore network before the federal audit hit. You were just the keyboard we used to type the password."
The scarred man looked up, his cold, dead eyes scanning the terrified crowd hiding behind the tables. They didn't care about the party. They didn't care about the family feud. They were professional clean-up crew operatives working for an international syndicate that had been quietly laundering money through midwestern real estate trusts for years.
And Grant and Thomas had unknowingly sold the keys to the kingdom straight to them.
"Where is the physical master ledger?" the scarred man shouted, shaking Thomas by the collar. "The original hard-copy paper deeds with the wet-ink signatures from 1995! Where are they?!"
Thomas whimpered, pointing a shaky finger directly toward the leather briefcase still sitting on the marble floor a few feet away from me.
"In... in the briefcase," Thomas choked out. "Natalie brought it from the estate..."
The scarred man’s eyes snapped toward our direction. He shoved Thomas aside, sending him crashing into a display table, and began walking directly toward where my father, Eli, and I were huddled on the floor.
My heart hammered so loudly against my ribs I was certain he could hear it. I slid my hand slowly into my coat pocket, my fingers brushing against the heavy brass key to the master vault my father had given me an hour ago.
If he finds the briefcase, we're dead, my mind screamed. He won't leave witnesses.
The heavy footsteps stopped just inches from where we lay.
"Well, well, well," the scarred man’s voice rasped from above us. "Looks like we have some uninvited guests trying to play detective."
A heavy boot kicked my shoulder, rolling me slightly onto my back. The dark, menacing barrel of the suppressed pistol lowered, pointing directly between my eyes.

"Give me the briefcase, sweetheart," the scarred man whispered. "Or I'll start with the kid."
