Chapter 9 - The Compliance Officer

The red laser dot from the silenced pistol hovered steadily against the lapel of my wool coat.
"You're making a mistake, Vanessa," I said, my voice dropping into a dangerous, icy calm as I kept my hand resting casually inches away from the heavy brass paperweight on the desk. "If you pull that trigger, the security triggers on this safe will automatically transmit every file on this desk directly to the federal prosecutor's secure server."
Vanessa stopped three paces away, her posture rigid, her professional marketing consultant facade completely stripped away to reveal a cold, clinical operative.
"There are no automated transmitters in this house, Emma," Vanessa replied, her voice smooth and devoid of any emotion. "Marcus disabled the hardline relays twenty minutes after you left the penthouse. You're entirely cut off."
"Then why didn't Marcus kill me himself?" I asked, watching her eyes for any micro-expression of hesitation. "Why send you to finish a job he started in the boardroom?"
A thin, bitter smile touched Vanessa's lips. "Because Marcus thinks like a traditional capitalist—he believes leverage and documents can control people. He thinks you'll hand over the ledger and go back to your penthouse like a good little heiress."
"And what do you think?"
"I think you're your grandfather's granddaughter," Vanessa said, taking another slow step forward. "You didn't scream when you caught Daniel at O'Hare. You didn't cry when you served him divorce papers at Alinea. And you didn't call the police when Marcus cornered you in your bedroom. You came down here looking for the truth because you want blood, not a settlement."
I didn't deny it. My hand shifted slightly closer to the heavy brass paperweight. "If I want blood, why would I protect Marcus's syndicate?"
"Who said anything about protecting Marcus?" Vanessa lowered the pistol by an inch, her gaze locking onto mine with an intensity that made the air in the basement feel electric. "Marcus thinks he's the head of this syndicate. But the 1984 ledger in your hand contains the signature of the primary silent partner who actually funded the harbor acquisition—a partner whose identity Marcus spent the last ten years trying to erase."
My breath hitched. "Whose signature?"
Before Vanessa could answer, a loud, violent crash echoed from the upper floor of the house—the sound of heavy boots kicking through the front foyer doors.
Shouts rang out through the stairwell.
"Federal agents! Nobody move! Clear the perimeter!"
Vanessa’s eyes flared with sudden, sharp alarm. She looked toward the basement stairs, then back at me.

"That's not Marcus's security detail," Vanessa hissed. "That's Director Vance's federal task force. And they aren't here to audit the accounts—they're here to sanitize the whole house before sunrise."
