Chapter 9 - The Unmarked Fleet

"Get down!" I hissed, grabbing my father by the shoulder and dragging him away from the window just as a sharp thwack shattered the glass pane above our heads, followed by a muffled, suppressed pop from the front yard.

A sniper round.

"Dad, stay in the hallway! Don't turn on any lights!" I ordered, my heart hammering against my ribs like a jackhammer.

I sprinted down the hallway toward the master bedroom where my mother was sleeping, throwing the door open just as she sat up in bed, gasping in terror from the sound of the gunshot.

"Matthew! What was that?" she cried out, her voice trembling.

"We need to move, now!" I hauled her out of bed, wrapping a heavy quilt around her shoulders and guiding both my parents toward the windowless interior walk-in closet at the center of the second floor. "Get inside, stay low on the floor, and do not make a sound under any circumstances."

"Matt, what's happening?" my mother sobbed, clinging to my sleeve.

"People are here for the files," I said, my voice cold and lethal. "Stay here."

I closed the closet door, locking it manually from the outside, and turned back into the darkened bedroom.

Downstairs, the heavy oak front door didn't just open—it exploded inward in a shower of splintered wood and iron deadbolts as a tactical breach charge blew the frame completely off its hinges.

Heavy, methodical boots stepped into the foyer. Four men, dressed head-to-toe in matte-black tactical gear with no insignia or identification patches, moved through the ground floor with terrifying, military-grade synchronization. Their automatic rifles swept the hallways with tactical flashlight beams, checking corners and clearing rooms with ruthless efficiency.

I crouched near the top of the stairwell, my hand gripping a heavy brass floor lamp I had unscrewed from the guest room. I knew I couldn't take on four armed mercenaries in a direct firefight, but I only needed one opening to reach the panic button wired to the local sheriff's direct dispatch line hidden in the master study.

The lead mercenary reached the base of the stairs, shining his tactical light up the dark stairwell.

"Second floor clear of primary targets," a voice rasped through a scrambled radio comms unit attached to his tactical vest. "Moving up to secure the physical hard drives."

The mercenary placed his heavy boot on the first wooden step.

I raised the brass lamp, preparing to bring it down with everything I had the moment he cleared the landing.

Suddenly, a brilliant, blinding flash of white light erupted from the front yard below, followed by the deafening roar of a massive explosion that shook the entire foundation of the house, knocking the mercenary on the stairs completely off balance.

Through the shattered front doorway, the flashing red and blue lights of half a dozen state trooper cruisers flooded the house once again, accompanied by the booming amplified voice of Agent Vance through a bullhorn:
