Chapter 10 - The Digital Trigger

The small red LED on the remote turned solid green with a soft digital chirp.

"Done," Marcus said, slipping the device back into his coat pocket with absolute calm. "By noon tomorrow, your badges, your pensions, and your freedom will be completely erased. The system protects its own, Solomon. It always has."

Before Marcus could take another step backward toward the elevator, the heavy emergency fire doors at the opposite end of the hallway blew open with a deafening crash.

"Federal Marshals! Nobody move!"

A half-dozen tactical agents in heavy black ballistic gear poured down the corridor, their assault rifles raised, tactical flashlights cutting blinding white beams through the amber gloom. At the front of the stack stood Deputy Director Sarah Sterling—the very official who had personally signed my original assignment orders, and the sister of the undercover agent whose murder file had vanished from the precinct vault.

Marcus Vance’s smug smile instantly evaporated. He turned his head sharply toward the arriving tactical team, his voice sharpening with sudden panic. "Hold your fire! I am Assistant Director Marcus Vance! Secure these two rogue officers immediately—they are compromised!"

Deputy Director Sterling didn't lower her rifle. She walked past the line of tactical operators, her boots clicking sharply against the linoleum, her face a mask of cold, unrelenting fury. She stopped three feet away from Marcus, looking down at him as if he were something she had scraped off the bottom of her shoe.

"You forgot one minor detail in your little digital upload, Marcus," Sterling said, her voice cutting through the silence like a razor blade.

Marcus frowned, his composure cracking around the edges. "What are you talking about?"

Sterling tapped the encrypted tablet sitting on my desk, which was still wired directly into the master server console. "When you routed the metadata through Sector 4, your terminal didn't just upload files to the press pool. It triggered an automated trapdoor protocol that routed every keystroke of your transfer override directly to the Department of Justice's independent oversight server—a server that cannot be wiped by a remote control."

Sterling turned her gaze from Marcus to the tactical team behind her.

"Agent Vance," she ordered, her voice ringing out through the empty floor. "Place the Assistant Director under arrest for treason, embezzlement, and the premeditated murder of Lieutenant Arthur Hayes."

Two tactical operators stepped forward instantly, grabbing Marcus by the arms and slamming him hard against the glass partition before snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

Marcus thrashed wildly, his face turning purple with rage as he was dragged toward the elevators. "You can't do this! You're destroying the entire department from the inside! You'll never survive what comes next!"

As the elevator doors slid shut, cutting off his frantic shouts, the heavy silence settled back over the bullpen. Sterling turned to me, lowering her weapon and offering a grim, tired nod.

"Well, Captain," Sterling said quietly, looking from the blood-spattered ledger on my desk to the blinking green light of the oversight server. "It looks like your first night on the job just got a whole lot longer. Are you ready for what comes tomorrow?"
