Chapter 3 - The Dead-Man’s Switch

Gregor’s grip was like a vice, iron fingers biting into the delicate skin of my upper arm where the gunmetal chains met the silk. He yanked me backward, attempting to drag me away from Larkin and Vance toward the service elevators at the back of the ballroom. The crowd parted instantly, faces blank and indifferent, turning away as if violence were merely background music to their champagne.

"Let her go, Gregor," Larkin commanded, taking a sharp step forward, his hand slipping free from his jacket with the black barrel of the Walther catching the crystal chandelier light.

Before Larkin could raise the weapon, Thomas stepped into his path, a manic, desperate grin plastered across his face. "Relax, cousin! Let the big guy take her down to the sub-level. We have questions to answer. That little bitch just threatened our entire operation with a federal data dump. You really gonna let an Excel monkey take down the Steves family?"

Larkin’s eyes flicked to Thomas, pure murder burning in his pupils. "Move, Thomas. Now."

"No," Thomas spat, his voice rising, drawing the curious glances of half the room. "She’s bluffing. Look at her—she’s a nobody from Queens with ninety grand in student loans. She doesn't have a dead-man's switch. She has a maxed-out credit card and a rented dress."

While the cousins argued, Gregor hauled me toward the corridor doors. My heels clicked frantically against the marble, but instead of fighting his immense physical strength directly, I used it. As we reached the heavy mahogany doors leading to the service stairwell, I threw my weight backward, driving the steel-tipped heel of my right stiletto straight down into the top of Gregor’s foot with all the fury of three years of repressed terror.

Gregor roared, a thick, guttural sound of agony, and his grip slackened for a fraction of a second.

It was all the opening I needed.

I spun out of his grasp, my sharp bob whipping through the air. Before he could recover, I reached into the hidden pocket sewn into the lining of my slit skirt, pulled out a small, heavy encrypted flash drive, and jammed it against the security keypad of the service elevator, overriding the local lock with a backdoor code I had memorized from Larkin’s master terminal.

The elevator doors slid open instantly with a soft chime.

Gregor lunged forward, his massive hands grabbing for my hair, but I stepped backward into the elevator car, slamming my palm against the emergency close button.

As the heavy steel doors began to slide shut, blocking out the sight of the glittering ballroom, I looked past Gregor's bleeding foot and saw Larkin staring directly at me through the narrowing gap. He wasn't reaching for his gun anymore. He was mouthing a single word through the closing doors.

Wait.

The doors locked shut with a definitive thud, plunging the elevator into absolute silence as it began its rapid descent toward the sub-basements of the Continental Hotel.

Except the indicator light didn't point down to the exit.

It pointed straight up, toward the private penthouse suite reserved exclusively for the syndicate's board of directors.
