Chapter 9 - The Architect’s Design

The concrete walls of the underground bunker seemed to close in around me, the air turning heavy and difficult to breathe.

“Engineered me?” I repeated, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. “What are you talking about? He didn't speak to me for six years. He let Elaine throw my clothes into the trash. He let Lucas humiliate me every single day until I walked out of this house with two suitcases and no money!”

“Because a broken, desperate girl working seventy-hour weeks to survive is hungry enough to do what a pampered executive never could,” Catherine said, walking over to the metal workbench and leaning against it. Her expression wasn't mocking; it was chillingly pragmatic. “Richard needed someone inside the municipal tax bureau and the secondary debt markets—someone with his exact bloodline, his exact intellect, and a legitimate personal grudge against his current family—to quietly consolidate his toxic liabilities without raising the SEC’s suspicion.”

I stared at her, the pieces of my entire adult life shattering and rearranging themselves into a horrifying new mosaic. Every sleepless night studying financial engineering, every grueling audit shift, every drop of sweat I had poured into building my independence—it wasn't my escape.

It was my programming.

“He used me,” I whispered, my voice breaking for the first time since the courtroom doors opened hours ago. “He used my trauma, my anger, my ambition—he weaponized my entire life just to clean up his corporate balance sheet so he could hand it to... to who? Elaine? Lucas?”

“Not Elaine, and certainly not Lucas,” Catherine said sharply. She reached into her blazer and pulled out a heavy, secure flash drive, holding it up between her fingers. “Lucas is a footnote. Elaine is a distraction. Your father was building a succession plan for the only person he ever truly respected: the one who had the stomach to tear down his entire empire if it meant winning.”

She stepped closer, her green eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made it impossible to look away.

“Which brings us back to why Marcus Thorne and the federal agents are currently tearing the house apart upstairs,” Catherine continued. “Richard didn't die of a heart attack three months ago, Victoria. That was the official coroner’s report released to the press.”

My breath hitched. “Then how did he die?”

“He didn't,” Catherine said smoothly. “He staged his own insolvency to flush out the remaining syndicate partners who were trying to hostile-takeover his overseas portfolio. And the master keys to unlock the entire multibillion-dollar holding trust aren't in the safe upstairs, and they aren't in my Zurich accounts.”

She tapped the side of the flash drive against the metal workbench.

“They are encrypted inside the biometric memory drive your father had surgically implanted in your mother’s engagement ring—the ring Elaine has been wearing around her neck like a trophy since the day of the funeral.”
