Chapter 6 - The Shadow Operative

The heavy iron poker whistled through the humid Charleston air, catching the intruder squarely across the forearm before he could draw his weapon. The man let out a sharp, breathless grunt as his Glock clattered against the imported marble floor, skidding beneath the dining table. Before the intruder could recover his balance, Jake stepped inside his guard, planting a swift, brutal palm strike directly beneath the man’s chin that snapped his head back and dropped him instantly onto his knees.
“Stay down,” Jake growled, his voice carrying the lethal authority of a seasoned operator holding a secured sector.
Across the room, Emily clutched the edge of the kitchen counter, her knuckles turning white. “Jake! Outside! You saw them—”
“I saw them,” Jake interrupted, never taking his eyes off the groaning intruder sprawled on the floor. He kicked the Glock away into the dark hallway, then yanked the man up by the collar of his tactical vest, slamming him against the wood-paneled wall. “Who sent you? Talk now, or the next thing that breaks isn't your arm.”
The man spat a mixture of blood and saliva onto the floor, a twisted, defiant grin spreading across his bruised face. “You think... you think Diane and Tyler were the only ones playing this game, soldier boy? They were just the front office. You stepped on a much bigger landmine than you realize.”
Through the open French doors, the three figures by the pool had already melted back into the shadows of the palmetto trees, leaving behind only the eerie, rhythmic splashing of the water. They hadn't panicked when their point man went down. They had retreated with military precision, treating the failed breach as a reconnaissance test.
Jake shoved the intruder hard against the wall, pinning him with his forearm. “Name. Contractor. Who signs your checks?”
Before the man could answer, a violent flash of blue light illuminated the backyard, followed instantly by a deafening boom that shook the entire house. The power grid flickered, hummed, and died, plunging the dining room into total, oppressive darkness.
“That’s your cue, captain,” the intruder wheezed, laughing darkly through his split lip. “They don't negotiate debts. They collect them in blood.”
Jake didn't hesitate. With a sharp twist, he drove the heel of his hand into the man’s temple, dropping him into unconsciousness with clinical efficiency. He turned toward the kitchen, his voice ringing out across the dark house. “Em! Grab the emergency go-bag from the master closet and meet me at the back pantry door. Now!”
Emily didn't freeze this time. Six months of terror had burned away, replaced by the hard, cold survival instinct she had learned simply by breathing the same air as monsters. Within seconds, she was by his side, her hand gripping a heavy flashlight, her breathing steady.

“They cut the main transformer,” Emily whispered, her voice fierce in the dark. “Jake, who are those men?”
“Not local muscle,” Jake said, pulling his encrypted satellite communicator from his tactical jacket and typing a rapid blind broadcast to Mac. “That was a coordinated tier-two extraction team. Someone with deep pockets and government clearance just realized Diane and Tyler are in custody—and they’re here to tie up every loose end.”
