Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Ledger

The woman stopped at the threshold of the dining room, her striking emerald-green eyes sweeping over the tense, silent room before locking directly onto my father.

“Arthur,” Catherine Vance said, her voice carrying a calm, effortless authority that immediately commanded the space. “The Zurich accounts have been fully repatriated. The international transfer protocols are complete.”

Eleanor whipped her head around, staring at Catherine in utter disbelief. “Who the hell are you?! What does she have to do with this?!”

“Meet Catherine,” Arthur said smoothly, removing his hand from my shoulder and walking toward the head of the table. “My legal partner and the primary trustee of the overseas holdings you spent three years trying to embezzle.”

I stood frozen, looking between Catherine and my father. A cold realization washed over me. All this time—every twist, every hidden layer, every corporate phantom—wasn't just about cleaning up a family estate.

“You weren't just hiding from the syndicate,” I whispered, looking straight at my father. “You and Catherine were building an international holding trust outside the jurisdiction of both domestic courts and federal oversight.”

Catherine smiled—a sharp, knowing expression. “Smart girl. Your father didn't just build an empire, Victoria. He weaponized it.”

Before I could demand answers, my phone buzzed violently in my pocket.

I pulled it out. It wasn't an alert from my military unit or the Boston field office. It was an encrypted text message from an unknown, high-level secure server routed directly from Washington.

The screen glowed with a single line of text:

“Colonel Sterling. Operation Sentinel is complete. However, incoming satellite telemetry indicates a secondary asset transfer has just been initiated from a black-budget account linked to your father’s primary overseas holding... destination unknown.”

My blood ran cold. I looked up from the screen, my eyes locking onto Catherine, then back to my father.

“You didn't close the accounts, Dad,” I said, my voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. “Someone else just drained them.”

Arthur’s calm, unshakeable demeanor fractured for a split second, his blue eyes narrowing as the lights in the grand mansion flickered once, twice, and then plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
