Chapter 4 - The Leverage Play

The cold steel of the suppressed pistol barrel dug deeper into the skin at the nape of my neck, sending a jolt of adrenaline straight down my spine. My finger twitched against the trigger guard of my Glock, but I knew the math: an inch too fast, and I’d be joining Leo Mercer on the concrete floor.
"Drop it," the voice repeated, calm, steady, and entirely devoid of panic. It was the voice of a professional—someone who had executed hits in subterranean bunkers and walked away without leaving a single fiber behind.
I slowly loosened my grip on my service weapon, letting it slide from my fingers. It hit the wet concrete with a dull, heavy clatter.
"Good girl," the man murmured.
Strong fingers caught the back of my tactical vest, violently spinning me around and shoving me hard against the side of the humming server rack. The impact knocked the wind from my lungs, but I kept my eyes locked on my captor.
He was in his late forties, wearing an impeccably tailored charcoal suit that looked entirely out of place in a damp, oil-slicked subbasement. His silver-streaked hair was neatly combed, and his sharp, hawkish features were framed by a pair of wire-rimmed glasses. He didn't look like a cartel enforcer or a street thug; he looked like a Wall Street executive who happened to moonlight as an executioner.
Viktor Vance.
"Special Agent Maya Brooks," Vance said, adjusting his cuffs with his free hand while keeping his gun leveled squarely at my chest. "Your reputation precedes you. They said the FBI’s Violent Crimes Task Force was staffed by bloodhounds. I see the legends didn't do you justice."
"You killed him," I spat, my voice tight as I nodded toward Leo Mercer’s lifeless body slumped over the console. "He was your inside man. He got you the override codes, and you still put a knife in his chest."
Vance let out a soft, dry chuckle, shaking his head. "Leo was a liability, Agent Brooks. Amateurs always are. He thought he was helping his cousin make a quick score and secure a fake passport. He had no idea what these network keys actually unlock."
"You're not just selling data to the cartel, are you?" I said, forcing my breathing to stay even, calculating every possible escape vector in the room. "The encrypted keys... they aren't for the financial grid. They’re military-grade defense protocols. You’re selling access to the naval shipyard’s satellite tracking network."
Vance’s eyes narrowed slightly, a flicker of genuine surprise crossing his aristocratic features. "You are sharper than I thought. But knowing the secret doesn't save you from the execution."
He reached down with his left hand, detached the heavy tactical briefcase from the mainframe terminal, and snapped the latches shut with a sharp click. The red status lights on the server racks suddenly shifted to a solid, pulsing crimson. A high-pitched digital klaxon began to wail in the distance—the automated alarm signaling a systemic core override.
"What did you just do?" I demanded, tensing my muscles for a lunge.
"I initiated a complete structural lockdown of the municipal grid," Vance replied smoothly, pulling a small, encrypted thumb drive out of his pocket and slipping it into his breast pocket. "And in exactly three minutes, this entire subterranean complex—including the precinct above us—will experience a controlled structural gas purge to eliminate biological evidence."
Before I could lunge, Vance stepped forward with terrifying speed, slamming the heavy butt of his pistol directly into the side of my temple. Pain exploded behind my eyes, blinding white light searing my vision as my knees buckled.

As I collapsed sideways onto the cold, wet concrete, the last thing I saw through a haze of dizziness was Vance stepping over my body, walking calmly toward the emergency exit tunnel as the heavy steel bulkhead doors began to slide shut automatically, sealing me inside a tomb.
