Chapter 1 - The Trap Door

The metallic scrape of the combat knife against the reinforced polymer of my case sounded like a death rattle in the cramped interrogation room. Officer Reynolds sneered, his forearm trembling slightly as he applied downward pressure, confident he was dealing with an arrogant civilian trying to skirt TSA regulations. He didn't know that the biometric latch wasn't just locked—it was wired to a dead-man's data-wipe protocol. The second an unauthorized edge breached the housing, a high-frequency EMP burst would instantly scrub the encrypted flash-drives inside, destroying three months of clandestine intelligence tracking a rogue defense contractor named Marcus Vance.

My heart rate remained locked at sixty beats per minute. I’ve survived firefights in the Hindu Kush and extraction missions under heavy mortar fire in Mogadishu; a hotheaded airport cop with a god complex wasn't going to make me blink.

"Last chance, tough guy," Reynolds growled, sweat beading on his upper lip. "Open it, or I slice the locking mechanism right off."

"Do it," I whispered, the stillness in my voice carrying a heavy, terrifying weight that finally made his partner shift uneasily by the door. "And watch your career evaporate before the clock hits zero."

Before Reynolds could drive the blade home, the heavy steel door slammed open with deafening force.

"Stand down, Officer Reynolds! Put the knife down right now!"

The voice belonged to Commander Thomas Vance of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, though the man stepping into the room wore a crisp Department of Homeland Security executive suit. Behind him stood four heavily armed federal marshals, their weapons drawn and trained squarely on Reynolds and his partner.

Reynolds froze, the blade hovering a millimeter above the latch. He blinked, disoriented, looking from the federal badges to me. "Commander? What is this? This man refused to—"

"This man," Commander Thomas Vance interrupted, his voice dripping with venom as he stepped forward and snatched the knife out of Reynolds' grip, "is Master Chief Daniel Carter, operating under direct orders from the Joint Chiefs of Staff. You just committed an act of domestic sabotage against an active-duty national security asset."

The color drained entirely from Reynolds' face. His partner instantly dropped his hands away from his holster, backing up against the wall.

I didn't smile. I stood up slowly, smoothing down the lapels of my tailored suit, and picked up my case. The biometric scanner flashed a soft, welcoming green as my thumb rested against the glass.

"Good catch, Thomas," I said quietly, looking past the trembling cops to the NCIS director. "Though your perimeter security was a minute too late. They almost compromised the package."

May you like

Thomas didn't look relieved. His jaw was tight, his eyes darting toward the hallway outside where travelers were rushing past the glass partitions. "The package isn't the problem anymore, Daniel. While you were sitting in this box, your secure satellite link in Washington just registered an incoming transmission. Someone inside the Pentagon just flagged your entire unit as rogue. They didn't just frame you for leaking the Vance dossier—they just activated a kill-switch on your life."
