Chapter 10 - The Federal Intervention

"That's her!" Warren pointed a shaking finger directly across the dining room at our booth. His face was pale, his hair uncombed, looking like a man who hadn't slept in forty-eight hours. "That's Leah Mercer! She's in unauthorized possession of classified corporate asset portfolios stolen from a private estate!"

The lead federal agent—a tall, imposing man with a silver crew cut and a laminated badge clipped to his lapel—strode directly toward our table, followed closely by the two local officers.

Victoria Sterling didn't flinch. She didn't even drop her coffee cup. She simply took another slow sip, her icy blue eyes flicking toward my father with absolute, murderous contempt.

"Well," Victoria murmured softly under her breath. "It seems the rat couldn't wait to sink his own ship."

The federal agent stopped at our table, placing both hands flat on the polished mahogany surface and looking down at me.

"Ms. Leah Mercer?" the agent asked, his voice a deep, gravelly baritone.

"I am," I replied, my voice remaining perfectly level as I closed the manila envelope and slid it back into my lap.

"I am Special Agent Thomas Vance, Federal Financial Crimes Task Force," the agent stated, pulling a folded document from his breast pocket. "We have a court-ordered warrant to seize all estate documents, financial portfolios, and digital assets associated with Mercer-Apex Holdings currently in your possession, pending an active investigation into interstate wire fraud and corporate asset manipulation."

Behind Agent Vance, Warren Ashford stepped forward, a desperate, triumphant smirk twisting his lips.

"You played a very dangerous game, Leah," Warren said, his voice dripping with righteous condescension. "You thought you could sneak around behind your family's back, playing corporate detective with documents you don't understand. You're done. Hand over the portfolio."

I looked at my father. For thirty years, I had watched him demand obedience, respect, and financial sacrifice while he hid behind his military past and his hollow pretensions of honor. And now, to save his own skin from the corporate syndicate he had served as a proxy, he had personally called federal agents to arrest his own daughter.

I slowly slid out of the velvet booth, standing up to my full height.

"Agent Vance," I said, ignoring my father entirely.

"Ma'am?"

"Before you execute that warrant and seize the portfolio," I said, reaching into my coat pocket and pulling out my smartphone, "you might want to check the encrypted audit trail I uploaded to the federal compliance portal at 5:15 AM this morning."

Agent Vance frowned. "What audit trail?"

"The one that cross-references every shell company, offshore account, and illicit municipal fund transfer operated by Vanguard-Apex Holdings," I replied, my voice ringing clear across the silent, luxurious dining room. "Including the specific consulting firm registered under Warren Ashford’s name that received four hundred and fifty thousand dollars in kickbacks to authorize the local grid acquisitions."

Warren’s triumphant smirk vanished in a single microsecond. The color drained from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost.

"What... what are you talking about?" Warren stammered, taking a panicked step backward. "She's lying! She forged those documents!"

Agent Vance’s eyes darted from my face to Warren’s terrified expression. He tapped the small tactical tablet on his wrist, reading the incoming notification pinging live from the secure server.

The agent slowly looked back up at me, his expression transforming from suspicion into absolute, professional astonishment.

"Agent Vance," I said, tossing my unsealed manila envelope onto the table between us. "If you want to arrest the person running this syndicate, you're looking at the wrong Ashford."
