Chapter 9 - The Ultimatum

Marcus pulled the satellite phone from his pocket and pressed it to his ear. "Hayes."

"Judge Hayes, this is Director Vance at DOJ headquarters," the voice on the other end came through with frantic urgency. "We just intercepted an emergency transmission routed through the federal courts' internal communication grid. You need to look at your secure judicial terminal immediately."

"I'm at the Dulles annex, Director. What kind of transmission?"

"It's a direct video feed addressed specifically to you," the Director said grimly. "And it's broadcasting live from the federal courthouse steps in downtown D.C."

Marcus spun around, striding over to the central monitoring console where the forensics tech was still working. "Open a secure browser uplink to the federal docket feed right now."

With a few keystrokes, the tech punched in the override code, and the main wall-mounted tactical display flickered to life.

The live video feed showed the grand marble steps of the federal courthouse in Washington, D.C. A dense crowd of reporters and camera crews had gathered behind a heavy police barricade. But standing directly in the center of the plaza, unfazed by the flashing camera bulbs and news reporters, was a tall, elegant woman wearing a dark wool coat and sunglasses.

It was Sarah Sterling.

The woman who was supposed to be locked inside a secure federal holding cell less than an hour ago.

A collective gasp broke out among the federal agents in the annex room. Officer Miller stared at the screen in absolute disbelief. "How is that possible? We just transferred her... wait, we didn't transfer her yet, she was still being processed!"

On the live broadcast, Sarah stepped up to a row of microphones set up on the courthouse steps. She reached up, removed her sunglasses, and looked directly into the camera lens as if she were staring right at Marcus.

"Judge Marcus Hayes," Sarah's voice rang out clearly through the broadcast speakers, smooth, confident, and utterly chilling. "If you are watching this, you realize by now that your little judicial crusade can't touch the real architecture of power. You hold a key to a vault, Judge, but I hold the keys to the entire federal pension and judicial oversight fund."

She paused, letting the dramatic weight of her words settle over the media mob.

"You have exactly one hour to drop all racketeering charges against Vance & Sterling Capital and personally sign an order dismissing the asset freeze," Sarah continued, her smile razor-sharp. "If you fail to comply, the encryption keys to every federal magistrate's encrypted bank account and pension fund in the United States will be permanently wiped from the national grid. The choice is yours, Judge: protect your court, or watch the entire American judicial system go dark."
