Chapter 10 - The Unseen Hand

The smoke cleared just enough to reveal the man standing framed in the ruined doorway.
He wore an immaculate grey trench coat that remained entirely untouched by the soot and water. His silver hair was neatly combed, and his sharp, hawklike features wore an expression of cold, unrelenting amusement.
Arthur Vance.
The same man who had engineered the federal compliance cover-ups in South Carolina was standing right here in the burning heart of the Moretti estate in Brooklyn.
“Well, well, well,” Arthur’s smooth, patrician voice cut effortlessly through the hiss of the sprinkler system. He stepped over the threshold, his leather shoes clicking against the ruined marble. “It seems the family reunion is complete. Michael, you really should invest in better perimeter security. Anyone can walk right in off the street.”
Michael didn't flinch. He slowly stepped in front of me, his body acting as a human shield, his pistol raised and locked squarely on Arthur’s chest.
“Vance,” Michael said, his voice dropping into a low, lethal growl that sounded like thunder rolling across a stormy sea. “You’ve crossed a very dangerous line tonight.”
“I’ve crossed a line?” Arthur chuckled softly, gesturing around the burning foyer with a gloved hand. “Michael, your entire empire is built on a foundation of sand. And the girl standing behind you is holding the shovel that’s about to bury it all.”
Arthur’s cold eyes shifted past Michael’s shoulder, locking directly onto me.
“Aurora,” Arthur said smoothly. “Your father was a brilliant man, but he made a critical error when he decided to play both sides against the middle. He thought he could steal the syndicate’s master ledger and hide behind a respectable middle-class life in Queens. Now, where did he put those encryption keys before he died?”
“I don't know what you’re talking about,” I said, my voice shaking but holding its ground as I stepped out from behind Michael’s shoulder.
“You’re lying,” Arthur replied, his smile fading into a thin, dangerous line. He raised his hand slowly, and three of his tactical operatives stepped forward, their assault rifles clicking as they leveled them directly at our heads. “And unfortunately, we’ve run out of time for pleasantries. Take them both.”
Michael’s finger tightened around the trigger of his pistol, a dark, reckless grin spreading across his face. “Try it, Arthur, and let’s see who walks out of this burning house alive.”

Before either side could pull a trigger, a loud, metallic screech echoed from the driveway outside, followed by the deafening roar of a heavy engine smashing right through the estate’s side courtyard wall.
Headlights blazed blindingly through the shattered front windows, illuminating a massive armored truck bearing markings that made even Arthur Vance’s face drain of color in an instant.
