Chapter 7 - The Ledger of Sins

“Don't listen to him, Lauren!” Andrew blurted out, panic cracking his voice as he rushed forward, trying to interpose himself between his wife and her uncle. “He’s lying. It’s a manipulation tactic to keep us from going to the authorities!”

“Is it, Andrew?” Julian asked softly, never breaking eye contact with Lauren. He walked over to the heavy oak desk, slid open a locked side drawer with a small brass key, and pulled out a thick, leather-bound ledger with yellowed pages. “Open it, Lauren. Read the entry dated November 14, 2011. The day your father officially bought out my shares for pennies on the dollar—right after threatening to hand me over to the federal prosecutor unless I signed away my birthright.”

Lauren didn't move. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a deafening drumbeat of dread.

“I’m not playing your games, Julian,” she said, though her voice lacked its earlier steel.

“It’s not a game,” Julian said, tossing the ledger onto the desk right in front of her. It fell open with a heavy thud, revealing rows of handwritten financial transfers and a signature at the bottom that made Lauren’s breath catch.

It wasn't Julian’s signature surrendering his shares voluntarily. It was her father’s signature—alongside a notarized addendum detailing a quiet settlement that had effectively robbed Julian of his inheritance through coercion.

“Your father didn't cast me out because I stole from the pension fund,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a bitter, resonant register. “He cast me out because I discovered he was systematically siphoning funds from the commercial development accounts to bail out his failing personal investments. I was going to expose him. So he framed me, stripped my voting shares, and rewrote the family history.”

Lauren looked up slowly, her gaze fixing on Andrew. The pieces of the puzzle weren't just rearranging themselves—they were completely shattering. “You knew about this,” she said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “When you married me... you already knew about Julian and my father.”

Andrew swallowed hard, sweating profusely under the harsh desk lamp. “I… I found some old legal documents in the corporate archives two years ago when we were digitizing the legacy files. Julian reached out to me shortly after. He didn't threaten me, Lauren. He just… showed me the truth. He showed me how your father controls every single person in this family by holding their secrets over their heads.”

“And you decided to become his executioner,” Lauren said, the absolute coldness in her tone freezing the room.

“I wanted out!” Andrew finally yelled, the pressure cracking his brittle composure. He slammed his hand down on the desk. “I wanted out from under your father’s thumb! Every promotion, every bonus, every project I ever led—everyone whispered that I was just Thomas Mitchell’s kept man! I wanted something that was mine. Even if I had to partner with the devil to get it.”

Julian watched the domestic explosion with the detached amusement of a spectator at a theater. He picked up his wine glass again, swirling the remaining drops. “He’s pathetic, yes. But he’s right about one thing, Lauren. You think you’re the loyal daughter protecting the family legacy. But you’re just the final brick in a fortress built entirely on lies.”

Lauren looked at the ledger, then at her husband’s ruined, desperate face, and finally at the uncle who had returned from the dead to blow her world apart. For a long moment, the instinct to retreat screamed inside her head. But the fear vanished, replaced by a cold, searing clarity.

She didn't reach for her phone to call the board. Instead, she picked up the heavy leather ledger, tucked it firmly under her arm, and turned toward the door.

“Where are you going?” Julian asked, his amused tone faltering just a fraction.

Lauren paused at the threshold, looking back over her shoulder with a gaze so chilling that even her uncle stepped back.

“I’m going to call my father,” Lauren said evenly. “And for the first time in my life, I’m going to let him know I’ve seen the truth.”
