Chapter 10 - The Phantom Heir

The screen of Hannah's phone went dark, the glowing pixels fading into the reflection of the clinic's frosted window. The photograph of the Zurich nursery seemed to burn against her retina.
Mallerie noticed the sudden change in Hannah's posture. "What is it? Is it the prosecutors?"
"No," Hannah said, her voice barely above a whisper, her mind racing backward through every legal document, every family dinner, every cold remark Patricia Caruso had ever uttered about bloodlines and inheritance. "It's not the prosecutors."
She didn't wait for Mallerie to ask another question. She turned on her heel, pushed open the clinic door, and stepped back out into the freezing Manhattan night.
The wind bit through her wool coat, but she barely felt it. She climbed back into her Mercedes, plugged her laptop into the dashboard hotspot, and bypassed the foundation’s seized network entirely, connecting directly through Diane Keller’s secure legal server.
It took her six minutes to find what she was looking for.
Page 42 of the original Caruso Family Trust charter—a document drafted in 1974 by Raymond and his older brother, long before Gabriel was ever born.
Hannah scrolled down the dense legal text until her eyes locked onto a handwritten addendum stamped and notarized in Zurich, Switzerland, dated three decades ago.
In the event of failure of direct patriarchal lineage, control of the primary trust and all subsidiary holdings shall revert exclusively to the surviving legal spouse of the secondary bloodline—unless said spouse produces an unencumbered audit proving clean title.
And right beneath it, a secondary clause that made the blood run cold in her veins:
Gabriel Caruso is adopted. His biological father was David Keane’s uncle—the original chief accountant who vanished in 1994.
Hannah stared at the screen as the horrifying, intricate architecture of the lie finally clicked into place. Gabriel wasn't just a lawyer who looked the other way. He wasn't just an unfaithful husband or a cowardly accomplice. He was the biological nephew of the man his uncle Raymond had destroyed thirty years ago—placed into the Caruso family as an insurance policy, raised to protect a fortune that legally belonged to someone else entirely.
And now, with the foundation frozen, Raymond in federal custody, and Gabriel’s partnership obliterated, the entire multi-million-dollar estate didn't belong to the Caruso family at all.
It belonged to Hannah's unborn child.
Her phone buzzed again on the passenger seat. An incoming call from an unlisted number.
Hannah stared at the screen as it blinked in the dark car. She knew who was on the other end. She knew what choice she had to make.
May you like
With steady fingers, Hannah picked up the phone, slid her thumb across the screen, and pressed it to her ear.
"Gabriel," she said into the cold silence of the car.
