Chapter 7 - The Ohio Connection

I pulled my car into the designated space outside my apartment building, cut the engine, but left the dashboard lights glowing. The rain pattered against the windshield in a steady, hypnotic rhythm. My phone was still buzzing in the cup holder, the screen illuminating my face in a pale blue glow.

I swiped to answer.

My mother’s face filled the small screen, framed by the familiar floral wallpaper of the kitchen in Columbus where I had grown up. She looked older, lines of quiet endurance etched around her eyes, but her gaze was fierce and sharp.

"Maya," she said without preamble. "Are you alright? CNN is running a breaking banner: Caldwell Defense Under Federal Investigation Following Whistleblower Leak by Estranged Family Member."

I let out a slow breath, leaning back against the headrest. "You're watching the news in Ohio at ten o'clock at night?"

"I don't sleep much when my daughter is going to war with a billionaire," she replied, her voice steady. "More importantly, Maya... they're playing old photographs. They showed a picture of Victor and me from 1998. And then they started asking questions about why you weren't listed in his corporate biography."

"I know, Mom. I'm sorry. I didn't plan for the family connection to leak publicly, but Blake ran his mouth at the White House, and it spun out of control."

My mother was silent for a long moment, stirring something in a mug off-screen. When she looked back at the camera, her expression had shifted from worry to something deeply complicated—a mixture of sorrow and a strange, hidden resolve.

"You think Blake leaked it because he's stupid," she said quietly.

"I know he did," I answered. "He wanted to protect his allowance and punish me for ruining his morning."

"Blake is a fool," she said softly. "But he didn't orchestrate how the media got your exact personnel file within twenty minutes of the White House briefing. Victor’s PR team has spent twenty-six years scrubbing my name and yours from every public record in this country. How did a reporter get your mother’s maiden name and your exact birth certificate so fast?"

A cold knot formed in my stomach. "What are you saying, Mom?"

"I'm saying someone inside Caldwell Defense wanted that leak to happen, Maya. Someone who wanted to force Victor into a corner where he couldn't cover up his financial crimes anymore—because they wanted the company to collapse from the inside."

"Who?" I asked, sitting up straight, my hand hovering over the steering wheel.

"Arthur Pendelton," my mother said, naming the vice president of quality assurance whom I had flagged in my original audit. "He called me this afternoon."

The rain suddenly felt louder against the glass. "Arthur Pendelton called you? In Ohio?"

"He didn't just call me," she said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "He left a voicemail saying he has the original, unredacted paper trail from 2004—the year Victor bought out his partner and forced us out. He said if you want to know why your father really abandoned us, you need to look at who owned Caldwell Defense before Victor took sole control."

Before I could ask another question, my phone beeped with an incoming notification: an encrypted audio file sent from an unknown number, accompanied by a single text line: Listen to the board meeting from October 12, 2004. Your father didn't just build this company, Maya. He stole it.
