Chapter 10 - The Ultimatum

The footsteps started moving toward the basement door.

My heart hammered against my ribs, but the beta-blocker held my rhythm steady. I didn't panic. I hit the download-complete confirmation on the flash drive, yanked it from the USB port, and shoved it deep into the pocket of my coat just as the basement door swung open.

Daniel stood at the top of the stairs, silhouetted against the kitchen light. His briefcase hung loosely from one hand, and his expression shifted from annoyance to outright suspicion as he saw me kneeling by the server rack.

“What are you doing down here?” Daniel demanded, descending the stairs two at a time. “Are you going through my files?”

I stood up slowly, brushing off my knees, keeping my posture entirely upright. I didn't back away. “I came to get my things, Daniel. But I found something much more interesting instead.”

Daniel stopped a few feet away from me, his eyes darting to the server tower, then back to my face. A flicker of genuine panic crossed his features, though he quickly tried to mask it with his usual arrogant smirk. “You don't know what you're looking at, Clara. You’re spinning out again. Put whatever you think you found down, and let’s talk upstairs like adults.”

“Like adults?” I stepped closer to him, my voice dropping into a quiet, razor-sharp cadence that made him halt. “Is that what you call conspiring with Dr. Vance to fabricate a fake psychiatric evaluation five years ago? Is that what adults do when they want to make sure their wife has no legal ground to stand on?”

The color drained entirely from Daniel’s face. The smirk vanished, replaced by the desperate realization that his carefully constructed fortress had just crumbled from the inside out. “You’re bluffing. You don't have anything.”

I pulled the flash drive slightly out of my pocket, letting the small metal edge catch the basement light. “Sarah Lin has the email thread where Dr. Vance confirms he logged a retrospective intake note specifically per your request. The server metadata proves you pulled and manipulated those records from this exact room.”

Daniel lunged forward instinctively, his hand reaching out to grab my wrist, but I stepped back instantly, my eyes locking onto his with absolute coldness.

“If you touch me, Daniel, this drive goes straight to the state prosecutor’s office before you even reach the top of these stairs,” I said, my voice unwavering. “You’re going to sign an immediate stipulation granting me sole physical custody of Lily, full ownership of the house, and unrestricted medical independence, effective tomorrow morning. No fights, no objections, no appeals.”

Daniel stared at me, his chest rising and falling rapidly. For the first time since I had met him, he looked entirely defeated—not because he cared about me, but because he knew his career, his reputation, and his freedom were sitting in the palm of my hand.

“And if I refuse?” he whispered, his voice trembling with suppressed rage.

“Then we see you in federal court,” I said, turning away from him and walking steadily toward the stairs. “And trust me, Daniel—unlike you, I don't need to fake my medical records to prove who’s standing firmly on solid ground.”

I walked up the stairs, leaving him standing alone in the dark basement with his blinking server lights. When I stepped out through the back door into the cool evening air, Lily was waiting on the neighbor's porch, holding a warm sugar cookie and waving happily as she saw me approach. I took her small, warm hand in mine, feeling the steady, unbroken beat of my own heart as we walked together toward a future that was finally, truly ours.
