Chapter 9 - The Standoff

"I must admit, Maya," Marcus said smoothly, stepping into the office with a slow, predatory stride while his associates sealed the door behind him. "You're far more resourceful than I gave you credit for. Coming straight to the lion's den? That takes a special kind of foolishness."

Eleanor shrank back in her chair, her eyes widening in horror at the weapon. "Marcus... what is the meaning of this? You work for the board!"

"I am the board, Eleanor," Marcus corrected without glancing at her, his dark eyes fixed entirely on me. "Or rather, I will be, once this messy little family business is tidied up. The Vance family has run its course. It's time for new management."

Arthur instinctively took a step back, his bravado completely vanishing at the sight of a gun. "You traitorous bastard—"

"Quiet, Arthur, before I skip the formalities and put one in your shoulder," Marcus snapped, his gaze never leaving mine. He took another step forward, stopping ten feet away. "Now, Maya. Where is the physical drive? Don't bother lying about cloud backups. I know your phone data was wiped from our server intercept an hour ago."

I didn't flinch. I kept my hand resting lightly on the handle of the stroller, feeling the steady, rhythmic pulse of my son's breathing inside. The terror I had expected to feel wasn't there; instead, a cold, crystalline clarity settled over my mind.

"You think you've won because you have a gun, Marcus?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm in the silent room. "You think killing me here solves your problem?"

"It solves the immediate complication," Marcus smiled thinly. "An unfortunate workplace dispute involving a disgruntled widow. The security footage will show you broke in, threatened the executives, and my men were forced to protect them. Clean, tragic, and entirely legal."

"Except for one tiny detail," I said, tilting my head slightly.

Marcus’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "What detail?"

"You didn't check who else was on this floor," I said clearly.

The heavy oak conference room door behind Marcus slowly swung open.

Stepping out from the shadows was Julian Vance, flanked not by corporate goops, but by two federal agents in dark windbreakers bearing bold yellow lettering across the back: FBI - Financial Crimes Division.

Marcus whipped his head around, his face draining of all color as the pistol in his hand wavered for a single, fatal heartbeat.

"Drop the weapon, Marcus," one of the agents commanded, raising his service pistol with absolute, unyielding precision. "Federal agents! Drop it now!"
