Chapter 5 - The Orders Change

The phone buzzed against my palm, a steady, rhythmic vibration that felt heavier than lead. The encryption watermark at the top of the screen wasn't just a standard status update; it was a Class-4 operational override code. The kind of code that didn't get sent to logistics clerks finishing up their terminal leave.

I pressed the green button and brought the phone to my ear.

“Major Reynolds,” a gravelly, metallic voice spoke through the secure channel. It wasn't Colonel Vance. It was the secure relay desk out of the Fort Meade command node. “We have an unverified signal routing through your personal staging device. Are you currently at the designated primary residence?”

“I am,” I said, keeping my eyes fixed on Diane and Ethan across the kitchen island. The silence in the room had become absolute; even Megan looked frozen, sensing that the domestic dispute had suddenly collided with something vastly larger and more dangerous than suburban real estate fraud.

“Stand by for secure packet transfer,” the voice instructed, completely ignoring my presence or the tension in the room. “Your return protocol dated three weeks ago has been flagged by the Directorate of Special Logistics. Your deployment file was administratively closed in error by an automated regional clerk. You are still under active retainer status for the Trans-Balkan infrastructure audit.”

My breath caught in my throat. “Error? I completed my eighteen-month mandate early by executive exception signed by General Halloway in October.”

“General Halloway’s signature was superseded by Directive 88-B issued last Tuesday,” the voice replied coolly. “All logistical controllers deployed in the Black Sea sector prior to the November border realignment are subject to an indefinite freeze on separation until the missing inventory manifests from the Pristina depot are fully accounted for.”

The missing inventory manifests.

Ten million dollars in medical supplies, communications gear, and heavy transport spares that had vanished off the digital ledger three days before I handed over command to my replacement—a logistics officer named Mark Vance.

Mark Vance.

Not just Ethan’s college roommate. Not just the incompetent con man running a fake software startup out of a radiator repair shop.

Mark Vance was Colonel Vance’s nephew.

I slowly lowered the phone, though the line remained open, the faint hiss of static filling the quiet kitchen. The pieces of the puzzle didn't just snap together; they fell into a pattern so dark and suffocating it made my skin prickle.

“What is it?” Diane asked, her voice dropping its aggressive edge, replaced by a sudden, nervous tremor as she watched the color drain from my face. “What did they say?”

I didn't answer her. I looked down at Ethan, who was still kneeling by the potato peels on the floor, shaking softly.

“Ethan,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “How did Mark pay for his share of the startup seed capital four months ago?”

Ethan didn't look up. He kept his face buried in his hands. “He… he had an investor. Some private trust fund out of Delaware.”

“A trust fund managed by a defense subcontractor shell company named Vance Logistics LLC,” I finished for him.

Ethan went completely rigid. He slowly lowered his hands, looking up at me with eyes full of sheer, unadulterated terror. “How… how did you know that?”

“Because Mark didn't just help you forge a power of attorney for a home equity loan,” I said, walking slowly toward him until I stood directly over him on the tile floor. “He used your house as a drop point to wash ten million dollars of missing military hardware through a fake commercial inventory startup.”

Diane gasped, stepping back until her spine hit the pantry door. “That’s—that’s absurd! Ethan’s business is legitimate! They make software for warehouses!”

“They don't make software, Diane,” I said, looking down at my husband with a heart that had gone entirely numb. “They run a shell corporation designed to receive fraudulent government procurement contracts funded by stolen equity lines of credit secured by my signature.”

The phone in my hand clicked. The secure relay desk at Fort Meade spoke again through the speaker, loud enough for everyone in the kitchen to hear.

“Major Reynolds, confirm your status. Federal Marshals have already been dispatched to secure the secondary asset holding location registered under Walker Holdings LLC. Estimated time of arrival: seven minutes.”
