Chapter 8 - Turning the Table

The morning sun broke over the airfield in a harsh, cold glare, casting long shadows across the rows of transport aircraft. By 0600 hours, Caroline was dressed in her service dress uniform, every ribbon, badge, and star pinned with absolute precision. She looked in the mirror, smoothing the fabric of her jacket, and saw not the frightened girl who had stood at the gate twenty-four hours ago, but a commander who had chosen her battlefield.

She walked out of her quarters to find a staff car waiting, with Thomas Vance standing by the door. His face was neutral, professional, and entirely unreadable.

"The change of command ceremony is at 0900," Thomas said quietly as she approached. "Richard Sterling flew in on the red-eye. He’s currently waiting in the VIP briefing room with the regional oversight board."

"Good," Caroline said, stepping past him into the car. "Let’s not keep them waiting."

The ride to the main headquarters building was silent. The base was waking up around them, security patrols moving with crisp discipline, unaware of the tectonic shift happening beneath the surface of the command structure.

When Caroline pushed open the heavy oak doors of the VIP briefing room, the conversation inside abruptly died.

Richard Sterling sat at the head of the polished conference table. He was a man in his late sixties with silver hair, tailored civilian clothes, and the easy, untouchable confidence of someone who had spent decades buying influence in the Pentagon’s back corridors. Seated around him were three members of the regional defense oversight committee.

"General Vance," Sterling said, standing up and offering a warm, patrician smile. "Welcome. We were just discussing the streamlining of the new logistics framework."

Caroline didn't take the seat he indicated. She remained standing near the door, her hands resting flat on the back of an empty chair.

"Cut the briefing, Mr. Sterling," she said, her voice cutting cleanly through the quiet room. "We both know why you're here."

Sterling’s smile flickered, just for a fraction of a second, before settling back into polite amusement. "I'm here to ensure a smooth transition of command for one of our most decorated officers. Surely there’s no misunderstanding about that."

"There isn't," Caroline replied, pulling a standard military flash drive from her pocket and placing it squarely in the center of the mahogany table. "Which is why I’ve already transmitted a complete, unredacted copy of the Unit 408 financial archives and the Sterling-Voss procurement correspondence to the Inspector General’s office in Washington."

The color drained from Sterling’s face instantly. The oversight board members exchanged uneasy glances, shifting in their seats.

"That's impossible," Sterling said, stepping forward. "The digital nodes were scrubbed last night."

"They were," Caroline agreed calmly. "Thomas wiped the local server just like you asked him to. But you forgot one basic rule of military logistics, Mr. Sterling: redundancy. Every transmission routed through this base is automatically mirrored to an offline cold-storage vault at the Pentagon archive—a vault that doesn't belong to the regional command."

Thomas Vance, standing quietly by the doorway, didn't flinch. He simply watched Sterling with a cold, level stare.

Sterling’s composure shattered. He slammed his hand down on the table. "You think you've won something, General? You’re destroying your own career along with mine! Those documents prove your commission was underwritten by my corporation!"

"They prove my father made a corrupt bargain thirty years ago," Caroline said, her voice ringing with absolute authority. "And they prove that you spent decades trying to collect on a debt that was never mine to pay. But unlike my father, Mr. Sterling, I don't hide behind closed doors."

Before Sterling could answer, the heavy doors behind him swung open, and two armed investigators from the Department of Defense Inspector General’s office stepped into the room, their badges gleaming under the fluorescent lights.
