Chapter 7 - The Broadcast Backlash

The noon news alert flashed across my phone screen before I could even clear the notification. I stepped quietly out of Mother's hospital room into the quiet hallway, my thumb tapping on the video link Marcus had sent.
The screen opened to a live broadcast feed from the steps of the county courthouse. Standing before a cluster of microphones and camera lenses was none other than Claire. She wasn't wearing her usual immaculate society attire; she wore a simple, muted gray coat, her hair pulled back into a conservative knot, projecting the image of a betrayed, desperate housewife speaking truth to power.
Beside her stood a high-profile civil litigator known for handling sensationalized celebrity divorces.
"For eight years, I believed I was married to an ordinary, hardworking maintenance contractor," Claire’s voice rang out through my phone speaker, clear, measured, and dripping with calculated victimization. "I supported him, I built a home with him, and I sheltered him while he struggled to find his footing. But behind my back, while my family and I dedicated our lives to building Whitaker Construction's regional presence, Daniel Whitaker engaged in systematic corporate manipulation."
I watched in cold disbelief as she leaned into the microphone.
"He concealed his true identity, built a multi-million-dollar empire under a veil of deception, and used it as a weapon against my aging father and my brothers on Christmas Eve," Claire continued, her voice trembling with manufactured emotion. "He fired forty-seven loyal employees without warning, plunged an entire family into financial ruin, and is now attempting to weaponize the federal government to silence anyone who ever dared ask him to account for his actions. This isn't just a corporate dispute. It is financial abuse on an unprecedented scale. We are filing an emergency injunction to freeze corporate assets and demand a fifty-percent marital division of Whitaker Construction based on hidden asset concealment during our marriage."
The reporters swarmed forward, shouting questions over one another like a pack of wolves catching the scent of blood.
The screen went black as I locked my phone. The sheer audacity of it took my breath away. She had twisted reality inside out, painting herself as the victim of a manipulative mastermind while her father and brother sat under federal investigation for stealing nearly two million dollars.
My phone buzzed again immediately. It was Marcus.
"Did you see it?" Marcus’s voice crackled through the speaker, tight with controlled fury. "She’s launching a public smear campaign to force our hand before the grand jury indicts Martin and Greg. Her attorney is trying to frame your entire corporate structure as marital property acquired through fraudulent concealment."
"Let her try," I said, my voice dropping into a steady, dangerous calm. "A marital asset claim requires proving I hid the company's existence during our marriage. But Claire knew I owned Whitaker Home Solutions from day one. We signed pre-incorporation disclosures when we got married. Her own signature is in my corporate safety deposit box."
"Do you have the original documents?" Marcus asked sharply.
"Locked in the main vault at Whitaker Tower," I replied. "Along with every text, email, and bank statement proving she actively begged me to hide my CEO status from her family so they wouldn't feel inferior."
"Good," Marcus said. "Because the legal fallout is hitting us faster than expected. Commercial lenders are calling asking if our credit lines are stable, and the board is demanding an emergency briefing. You need to get back to headquarters."
"I'm on my way," I said.
I walked back into Room 412. Thomas was standing by the window, watching me with a mixture of concern and anxiety. He must have caught snippets of the broadcast through the hallway murmurs or seen the alert on his own phone.
"That was Claire on the news, wasn't it?" Thomas asked quietly.
"She's trying to flip the narrative," I replied, grabbing my jacket. "She wants to paint me as the villain who hid his wealth and fired her family out of spite."
"She’s making a fatal mistake," Thomas said, his legal instincts kicking in despite his own troubles. "If she’s claiming you concealed the company's existence, she’s opening the door for discovery. In a high-stakes corporate discovery process, every single financial record of Martin and Greg's branch will be subpoenaed publicly. She thinks she's weaponizing public opinion, but she's actually handing you the rope to hang her family's entire financial history out in the open."
I looked at my brother, realizing the truth in his words. Claire had acted out of panic and wounded pride, blind to the legal minefield she had just stepped into.

"Watch over Mother," I told Thomas, placing a hand on his shoulder. "I have a press conference of my own to give."
