Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Brownstone

The bullet slammed into the wood paneling just inches from my head as I yanked the velvet curtain aside. Behind it wasn't a solid wall, but a narrow, dimly lit service stairwell that smelled of old dust and damp stone. I didn't look back. I scrambled down the metal steps, the sound of shouting and heavy boots fading slightly as I descended into the depths of the brownstone.

My chest burned, and my hands were shaking so hard I could barely keep my fingers wrapped around Mr. Cosenza's letter. This wasn't about medical bills or restaurant tips anymore. The invisible barrier I had spent my entire life trying to maintain—the safe distance between working-class survival and the brutal underworld of Manhattan—had completely shattered.

The stairwell led down into a damp, stone-walled cellar lined with wine racks and old wooden crates. A heavy iron door at the far end stood slightly ajar, leading out into a narrow alleyway behind the brownstone.

As I pushed the iron door open and stepped out into the cool autumn air of the Manhattan night, a hand suddenly grabbed my arm from the shadows.

I choked back a scream and tried to yank away, but a familiar, low voice cut through my panic.

"Quiet! It's me," Gabriel whispered, pulling me into the darker recess of the brick wall.

He looked breathless, a small graze of blood marking his left temple, but his eyes were sharp and completely focused. He pulled out his phone, his fingers flying across the screen.

"Are you okay?" I whispered, my voice trembling as I pressed my back against the cold brick. "Your father—is he—"

"My father knows how to handle his own house," Gabriel interrupted, though a muscle in his jaw twitched, betraying his anxiety. "Vince had a clean shot, but he underestimated how many loyalists were still stationed outside. The security detail outside heard the shot. Half of Vince's men have already been detained or scattered."

"Then why are we hiding in an alley?" I demanded, finding a sudden surge of angry courage. "Your uncle died for this ledger, Mr. Cosenza gave his entire life to protect your family's secret, and we're standing out here in the dark like criminals!"

Gabriel stopped typing on his phone and looked at me. In the dim amber glow of the alley light, the cold, untouchable corporate lawyer exterior was entirely gone. What remained was a man who was realizing just how much his family's history had cost innocent people like me—and like Mr. Cosenza.

"Because the ledger isn't just a list of names, Tessa," Gabriel said quietly. "My father didn't tell you everything in the study. The men Vince works with aren't just local thugs. They're tied to the federal indictments currently sitting on the desk of the U.S. Attorney's office. If that ledger goes public, it won't just destroy my family's syndicate—it will bring down half the financial and political establishment in New York."

My breath caught. "And what does that have to do with me?"

"Everything," Gabriel said, gripping my shoulders gently. "Because Gaetano didn't just leave you a ring and some cash. He left you the key to decoding the names inside that book. And Vince knows it."
