Chapter 10 - The Open Door

The afternoon sun was warm and golden as I walked out of the Apex Financial tower and onto the downtown sidewalk, holding Ivy snugly against my chest in her carrier. Arthur walked beside me for half a block before shaking my hand with a rare, approving smile.

“You handled that like a veteran negotiator, Emily,” he said. “The asset partition is locked in. The corporate fallout is entirely on him. You are completely free.”

“Thank you, Arthur,” I said, smiling genuinely for the first time in months. “I’m ready for the next chapter.”

When I reached the ninth-floor apartment, I unlocked the door and stepped inside. The space was bright, quiet, and filled with the scent of fresh coffee and clean linen. There were no dirty dishes in the sink, no lingering tension in the air, and no one waiting to tell me how to manage my life.

My phone buzzed on the kitchen counter. I picked it up, expecting a message from Arthur or a notification about the ongoing property division.

Instead, it was a text message from an unknown number—a local boutique financial planning firm downtown, asking if I would be open to discussing a consulting partnership for their upcoming enterprise liquidity restructuring.

I looked down at Ivy. She was wide awake now, her bright, curious eyes fixed on mine, kicking her tiny legs with absolute, unfiltered joy.

I walked over to the tall warehouse window, looking out over the sprawling skyline of the city where I had built my career, lost my footing, and ultimately reclaimed my entire life.

I didn't reply to the text message immediately. I sat down at the glass dining table, opened my laptop, and began drafting a response—not as a tired new mother seeking permission, but as a professional ready to step back into her own power.

The locks on my life were finally secure, and the door was wide open.
