Chapter 9 - The Cold Storage Locker

The rain drummed a relentless, deafening rhythm against the corrugated tin roof of Warehouse 14, an isolated, windowless refrigeration unit tucked away behind massive stacks of rusted shipping containers.
Our three-car federal convoy rolled to a quiet halt fifty yards away, completely concealed by the shadows of a towering gantry crane.
I killed the engine, grabbed my rifle, and stepped out into the freezing downpour. The air here tasted of salt water, diesel exhaust, and raw fish—the unmistakable tang of an international shipping hub.
Vance and four tactical operators moved up beside me, their tactical lights cutting sharp, pale beams through the mist.
"Thermal imaging shows two heat signatures inside the main office partition," Vance whispered into my comms channel, his breath pluming white in the chill. "No heavy movement outside. It looks like they’re waiting for the final transport truck to arrive."
"That means the girls are still here," I said, a fierce, cold determination settling over my chest. "They haven't made it onto the ship yet."
We didn't wait for a battering ram. Two operators stepped up to the heavy steel-reinforced side door, placed a quiet linear charge along the locking mechanism, and detonated it with a muffled thump that was instantly swallowed by the roar of thunder overhead.
The door blew inward with a cloud of gray dust and frost.
"FBI! Federal agents! Nobody move!" I screamed, leading the breach through the smoking threshold with my rifle raised.
The interior was a cavernous, frost-coated freezer unit converted into a makeshift holding pen. Metal chain-link fencing divided the space into stark enclosures.
Huddled together in the corner of the primary enclosure, shivering violently in gray thermal blankets, were three young women. Their eyes went wide with terror as the tactical lights swept across them, before realization and overwhelming relief flooded their faces.
At the center desk, a panicked syndicate handler scrambled to smash a burner phone against the concrete floor while reaching frantically for a Glock resting beside an open laptop.
"Drop the weapon!" I shouted, stepping forward and closing the distance in two strides.
The handler froze, his hand hovering inches from the grip of the pistol, slowly raising his palms into the air as red and blue tactical lasers danced across his chest.
"Get these women out of here now," I ordered, gesturing to the tactical team. "Secure the perimeter and get paramedics on site immediately."
As Vance moved past me to comfort the victims, I walked over to the desk, picked up the smashed burner phone, and lifted the open laptop. The screen was still unlocked, displaying an active satellite messaging chat window with a single unread notification blinking at the top.
