Chapter 4 - The Diversion Protocol

"They're tracking the digital check-in logs," Captain Hayes said, his jaw tightening into a hard line as he punched a code into the satellite phone. "When you changed your seat back to economy, Grandma, the gate scanner pinged the legacy database in Chicago because Arthur’s ticket number was still flagged in the archived fraud prevention queue from 1999."

"Can they force us to land in Denver?" I asked, my heart pounding as I looked out the narrow galley window at the endless expanse of clouds below.

"They can try," Captain Hayes replied grimly. He brought the phone to his ear, rattling off an authorization code to dispatch. "This is Captain Hayes of Flight 1184. We are operating under commercial passenger transport rules. Unless there is an active structural emergency, we are maintaining our flight path to Los Angeles."

A harsh, metallic voice crackled through the speaker on the bulkhead, cutting over the captain's words.

"Flight 1184, this is FAA Regional Director Vance. You are carrying an unauthorized passenger traveling under a suppressed federal evidence manifest. Divert to Denver immediately, or your landing clearance at LAX will be revoked and the aircraft will be met by armed security upon touchdown."

Vance.

The name hit me like a physical blow. Victor Vance—the same federal prosecutor whose signature I had seen on old corporate liability documents, the man whose family had deep ties to the aviation conglomerates that buried my grandfather's report.

Grandma didn't flinch. She reached out, her frail hand covering mine on the metal counter, and looked directly at Captain Hayes.

"Don't divert, Captain," she said, her voice clear and steady. "Arthur waited twenty-seven years for this flight to land. Another three hours won't kill us."

Captain Hayes looked at Grandma, then at the satellite phone, before letting out a sharp, decisive breath. He disconnected the secure line, tossed the phone onto the counter, and turned to the intercom panel.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Captain Hayes's voice echoed smoothly through the cabin speakers. "This is your captain speaking. Due to routine air traffic control adjustments, we will be maintaining our direct flight path to Los Angeles with no stops. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the rest of your flight."

He clicked off the mic and looked at me. "Tell your grandmother she picked a hell of a day to fly economy."
