Chapter 10 - The Road Home

The crisp autumn air hit my face like cold water as we stepped outside the terminal doors.

The police cruiser's lights pulsed against the gray asphalt, painting the wet pavement in rhythmic washes of crimson and blue. Two state troopers stood by Mark, their voices low and professional as they read him his rights and placed him in the back of the vehicle. He didn't resist. He didn't look back. He simply accepted the consequence of the balance sheet he had spent decades falsifying.

Maya stood beside me on the concrete curb, holding Buster’s frayed leash. The scruffy dog leaned against her knee, occasionally letting out a soft whimper as the sirens wailed in the distance.

The shoebox containing Caleb’s notebook and the final letter rested safely under my arm.

"What happens now, Diane?" Maya asked softly, her voice carrying the weariness of a long journey finally reaching its twilight.

I looked out across the deserted parking lot toward the highway that led back to our town—back to the empty suburban house, the memories, the quiet rooms that would never be the same again.

"We go home, Maya," I said, looking down at her with a steady, quiet strength I hadn't known I possessed. "Not Mark’s home. Our home. We have a lot of things to unpack."

Maya offered a small, hesitant smile, the first genuine one I had seen touch her face in three years.

As we walked toward the rental car, the gray clouds overhead began to part, letting a single streak of pale golden sunlight cut through the afternoon sky, illuminating the road ahead.
