Chapter 5 - An Unexpected Offer

Julian watched the exchange in silence, his expression shifting from corporate caution to genuine intrigue. He picked up my portfolio, flipping back to the financial projections I had compiled for the Grand Plaza project.

"So," Julian said slowly, looking up at me. "Your ex-husband's flagship restaurant is sinking, he's publicly accusing you of corporate espionage, and his family is trying to use emotional blackmail to force you back into unpaid servitude."

"Pretty much," I said, feeling a strange sense of liberation wash over me. The fear was gone, replaced by a sharp, focused resolve.

"And yet," Julian continued, tapping a finger against the leather binder, "the location of Miller's Hearth—that historic brick building right off the main harbor strip—happens to be zoned for the exact upscale boutique dining concept we’ve been trying to acquire real estate for over the past year."

I narrowed my eyes slightly. "What are you getting at, Julian?"

"The bank holds the mortgage on that property," Julian said smoothly. "And given Brian's current financial exposure, that loan is about to go into default within the week. Horizon Hospitality was planning to acquire it through a third-party auction anyway."

Marcus let out a low whistle, looking between his cousin and me. "Wait. You're talking about a hostile takeover of the actual building?"

"I'm talking about good business," Julian corrected, smiling faintly. "And I'm wondering, Samantha—since you know every square inch of that kitchen, every supplier relationship in the county, and every flaw in Brian's management style—how would you feel about buying out your old home at a foreclosure discount?"

The proposal hung in the air, heavy with consequence. Every nightmare I had endured in that kitchen, every holiday spent slaving away while Beatrice criticized my posture, every time Brian dismissed my contributions—they all flashed through my mind.

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed again on the counter. I glanced down. It wasn't my mother this time.

It was an unknown number, but the voicemail notification was already blinking. I hit play on speakerphone, and Brian's voice filled the quiet test kitchen, desperate and frantic.

“Samantha, please. Mom is beside herself, and the bank is threatening to lock the doors on the restaurant tomorrow morning. If you have any heart at all, pick up the phone. Name your terms. Just... please tell me how to fix this.”

I looked up at Julian and Marcus, the digital screen of the Grand Plaza glowing behind them, and then down at the phone buzzing against the stainless steel.

The game had changed entirely. And for the first time in my life, I held all the cards.
