Chapter 4 - The Root of the Ledger

Zara froze. The ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway suddenly sounded loud, like a hammer striking iron.

“Your name?” Zara’s voice dropped to a harsh whisper. “You? You helped Bennett take the company?”

“I didn't help Bennett,” David said, his voice dropping into a low, defensive cadence as he stepped closer. “I tried to stop your father from burying us both. Ten years ago, after the accident, the company was hemorrhaging cash. Marcus wouldn't sell a single share of stock. He was too proud, too stubborn to admit that Coleman Logistics was insolvent. So he took a loan from a shell company to cover payroll.”

“From Vanguard,” Zara said, her mind racing back to the metallic case under Richard Bennett’s seat.

“From Vanguard,” David confirmed, leaning down slightly to meet her eyes. “Only the terms of that loan weren’t financial. They were structural. If Marcus defaulted on a single quarterly payment after 2025, control of the European assets reverted automatically to the minority partner. And three years ago, Marcus transferred that minority stake to me to keep the board from discovering our exposure.”

Zara stepped back, her hand coming up to touch the collar of her sweater. The ground beneath her feet felt unsteady. Everything she had known about her family—the unbreakable strength of her father, the absolute authority of the Coleman name—was built on a foundation of hidden debt and secret transfers.

“If you hold the minority stake,” Zara said slowly, her analytical mind cutting through the shock, “then you aren’t losing the company to Bennett. You’re the one selling it.”

David didn’t flinch. He didn’t look away. Instead, a grim, sad smile touched his lips.

“I’m not selling it, Z. I’m rescuing it from a man who would rather let the whole empire burn down around us than admit he failed.” David reached into his coat and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive, placing it gently beside the fraudulent manifests. “The board meeting is at nine o'clock tomorrow morning at the Mayfair branch. Your father plans to blame a rogue hacker in the Singapore office to buy another month.”

“And what do you want me to do?” Zara asked, her voice deadpan.

“I want you to sit in that boardroom,” David said softly. “And when your father tells his lie to the directors, I want you to open this drive on the main projector. Show them who actually signed the terminal leases.”

Zara looked from the flash drive up to her uncle’s face, her chest tightening with an overwhelming sense of betrayal. She wasn't just a daughter caught in a corporate crossfire anymore. She had been handed the weapon to destroy her own father.
