Chapter 7 - The Audit Trail

By 8:00 AM, the glass-and-steel monolith of Mercer Tech Headquarters in downtown Washington towered over the morning commuter traffic.
I didn't enter through the visitor's lobby. As an active-duty Colonel assisting the Office of the Secretary of Defense with an ongoing procurement compliance review, my arrival at the corporate executive suite was preceded not by a receptionist's phone call, but by two federal compliance investigators in dark suits carrying secure digital logging equipment.
When the executive elevator doors slid open on the forty-second floor, Arthur Mercer was standing behind his massive glass desk, looking flushed and furious as his chief legal counsel tried to explain why the Department of Defense had frozen their multi-billion-dollar contract overnight.
"What is the meaning of this?" Arthur roared, slamming his hands onto the glass surface as we stepped out of the elevator. His eyes locked onto me, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the federal investigators in my crisp dress blues. "You! You have no jurisdiction here! This is a private corporate entity!"
"Actually, Mr. Mercer, under Federal Procurement Code Title 10, the Department of Defense holds full authority to audit any contractor suspected of fraudulent compliance data or compromised safety protocols," lead investigator Vance-appointed auditor Miller stated smoothly, flashing a federal badge. "Furthermore, we have received credible documentation regarding unauthorized financial disbursements linked to historical defense contracts."
Arthur’s face turned from angry red to a sickly ash white. His eyes darted to my hands, where I held the worn leather ledger we recovered from the estate last night.
"You broke into my house," Arthur hissed, his voice trembling with suppressed rage as he rounded the desk. "That is private property. I will have you court-martialed, stripped of your rank, and thrown in a military prison before lunch."
"You can try, Arthur," I said, stepping forward until I was standing right across the glass desk from him, mirroring the posture he had used to intimidate me at the White House checkpoint twenty-six years ago. "But while you're busy calling your lawyers, you might want to explain to the investigators why your company's founding capital was tied to an extortion scheme against a military officer—and why Elena Mercer's name was forged on the dissolution papers three days before her death."
The silence in the executive suite was absolute. The corporate lawyers exchanged nervous, panicked glances. One of them slowly closed his briefcase.
Arthur’s gaze locked onto mine, and for the first time in twenty-six years, the invincible billionaire CEO looked entirely hollowed out.
"You think this makes you righteous?" Arthur whispered, his voice cracking with venom. "You think destroying the company I built out of nothing brings your mother back? I built an empire, Kate. You just follow orders."
May you like
"No, Arthur," I replied softly, laying the leather ledger flat on his pristine glass desk right over his corporate blueprints. "I just verify them."
