Chapter 4 - The Gatehouse Protocol

The heavy brass clock on the mantle ticked off the seconds with agonizing slowness. Three minutes past eight. Outside the thick leaded glass of the study, the fog was beginning to roll off the Chesapeake, wrapping the sprawling lawn and the glittering white wedding pavilions in a damp, gray shroud.

"Open the secure line to the gatehouse," King Edward ordered, his voice cutting through the silence like a scalpel.

Alexander punched a button on the intercom console built into the desk. The speakers crackled with static before the crisp, tense voice of the head of royal security filled the room.

"Your Majesty. Federal transport vehicles have breached the outer security perimeter. They are bypassing the press barricades and heading up the main drive. They claim they have an expedited federal warrant signed by the Attorney General."

"Under whose authority?" Edward demanded.

"Department of Justice, Financial Crimes Division, sir. Led by a Director Vance. They aren't waiting for clearance; local state troopers are escorting them."

Rachel let out a low sob, sliding down the side of the bookshelf until she sat in a crumpled heap on the Persian rug, her magnificent white veil trailing across the dust like sea foam. "They're going to arrest me," she whispered, staring blankly at the floor. "In front of everyone. The network cameras are still broadcasting the post-ceremony reception live. The whole world is going to watch."

I looked down at her. The anger that had surged through me moments ago had given way to a strange, hollow clarity. For years, I had carried her, protected her, and excused her reckless ambitions because I believed that was what an older sister was supposed to do. And in return, she had quietly engineered my destruction to secure a gilded cage for herself.

"Let them," I said.

Alexander’s head snapped toward me. "Commander—if they arrest her, the entire alliance collapses. The public scandal will cripple the crown, and the asset trail will automatically pull your name into federal court proceedings regardless of whether you signed the false manifest."

"Then she should have thought of that before she used my identity to steal millions of dollars in sovereign funds," I replied, my voice steady and cold. I picked up the pen resting beside the king's velvet folder. I didn't pick it up to sign the restitution order. I picked it up to write my own name across a blank sheet of paper, tearing it cleanly in half.

"Emily, please," Rachel choked out, looking up at me with red, tear-streaked eyes. "You're my sister. You can't just let them take me."

"I am an officer of the United States Navy," I said, looking down at her without a trace of sympathy. "I swore an oath to uphold the law, Rachel. Not to cover up financial treason because you wanted a fairytale wedding."

King Edward watched me closely, his eyes narrowing slightly beneath his heavy brows. He didn't look angry; if anything, there was a strange, grim sort of respect in his gaze.

"You have steel in your spine, Commander," the king observed quietly. "More than your sister, and certainly more than a few members of my own cabinet. But heroism without pragmatism is just suicide. If you let those federal agents walk into this room, they won't just arrest your sister. They will impound every digital archive in this estate—including the classified naval logistics logs stored on your personal service tablet, which your sister conveniently linked to the same server."

My stomach dropped. "My tablet?"

"Where do you think she routed the secondary encryption keys from?" Alexander said bitterly, running a hand through his hair. "She didn't just use your name, Emily. She synced your active-duty field terminal to the trust's offshore server. If the DOJ seizes your tablet, they'll find classified military communications mixed right in with the fraudulent transactions. You won't just face a financial inquiry—you'll face a federal espionage review."

The trap snapped shut with absolute, mathematical precision. Rachel hadn't just stolen my identity; she had wired a detonator directly to the foundation of my entire career.

Before I could speak, a heavy, authoritative knock rattled the oak doors of the study, followed by the cold voice of the lead federal agent filtering through the wood.

"Open the door. Department of Justice. We have a federal warrant for the arrest of Rachel Carter and an immediate search order for all digital archives on these premises."
