Chapter 5 - The Forged Foundation

The whiteboard seemed to tilt, the network of lines and arrows blurring into a chaotic web of ink.

“A forgery,” I said. The word tasted like copper in my mouth.

“State-certified forensic analysis confirms it,” Jason said, his voice grim. “Someone who had access to Arthur’s private study—someone who knew the exact texture of his letterhead and the specific notary public he used for personal estates—replicated his signature to execute a retroactive property transfer.”

I looked back at Sarah. She was shaking her head slowly, her hands covering her face now, muffled sobs breaking through her fingers.

“Not me,” she whispered behind her hands. “I swear to God, Claire, I didn’t know about the warehouse. I only signed what he put in front of me for the Boston accounts. I swear I didn’t know he was forging your father’s name.”

Daniel hadn’t just been a cheating husband stealing corporate cash. He had been a thief playing a long game—one that started years before our wedding anniversary, before the West Coast expansion, before Vanessa Cole ever walked into our lives.

He had targeted the foundation itself.

“Where is he?” I asked, my voice dropping into a quiet, dangerous register that made even Jason step back slightly.

“We tracked his corporate mobile token an hour ago,” Jason said, pulling a printed log from his folder. “He didn't go to the Tribeca penthouse. And he didn't go to any of his usual accounts.”

Jason slid a single photograph across the table.

It was a security still from a toll bridge heading north toward New Hampshire, taken at 3:15 AM. Through the grainy windshield, Daniel’s profile was clear, staring straight ahead with both hands locked on the steering wheel of his car.

In the passenger seat, half-asleep against the headrest, was Vanessa.

And in the back seat, loaded tight under a canvas tarp, were three heavy metal storage boxes bearing the official red seals of the Arthur Graystone private estate archive—boxes containing the original, pre-incorporation deeds of every single property Graystone Dynamics currently stood on.

“He’s not running away, Claire,” Jason said quietly. “He’s liquidating the origin.”

My phone vibrated in my pocket. A text message from an unknown number.
