Chapter 3 - The Other Son

Clare stared at the photograph, the image blurring behind a sudden rush of hot tears. The baby in the picture had the distinct shape of the Mercer jaw—the same sharp line that defined Harrison's face, the same feature she had imagined resting on her own child's face just hours ago.

"A brother?" Clare's voice was barely a whisper. "Harrison never mentioned a sibling. He told me he was an only child, that his mother died when he was young and his father poured all his grief into him."

"A convenient narrative," Eleanor said, walking back to her chair. "William had an affair with me thirty years ago. I was his legal assistant before he married into Manhattan royalty. When I became pregnant, William offered me a choice: raise the child in secret with a generous stipend, or face a legal war I couldn't win. I chose my son's safety."

"And Harrison?" Clare asked, her mind racing to connect the pieces.

"Harrison didn't find out until he joined his father's firm," Eleanor explained. "By then, William was aging, feeling guilty, and starting to rewrite his will to include my son—his firstborn. Harrison couldn't stomach the thought of sharing his inheritance or his father's validation. So, when William tried to make things right legally, Harrison stepped in to block it."

Clare sank back into the velvet armchair, her hands resting protectively over her swollen belly. The narrative of her marriage—eight years of careful curation, romantic dinners, late nights at the office, and whispered confidences—was crumbling into dust. It hadn't been a partnership. It had been a performance.

"That's why he texted me Grace," Clare realized aloud, the connection clicking into place with horrifying clarity. "He was thinking about his past life, about the woman he destroyed to protect his empire, and he projected it onto me. He thought I was uncovering the Grace deception."

"You were," Eleanor said. "And something else, too. William didn't just leave you a letter, Clare. He left you control of the swing votes in Mercer Hotels' upcoming board restructuring. He knew Harrison was planning to liquidate assets to cover bad debts. William wanted you to stop him."

Clare looked down at the brass key in her pocket. The weight of it felt entirely different now. It wasn't just a relic of a dead man's guilt; it was a weapon.

"Where is your son now?" Clare asked, looking up at Eleanor.

Eleanor hesitated, a shadow crossing her face. For the first time, the older woman looked genuinely afraid.

"That's the problem, Clare," Eleanor said softly. "Three days ago, he went to New York to confront Harrison face-to-face. And I haven't heard from him since."
