Chapter 9 - The Chamber Doors

The oak double doors of Judge Henderson’s chambers opened before Marcus could even knock. The judge himself stood in the doorway, a tall man with silver hair and wire-rimmed glasses, holding a stack of freshly printed documents in his hand.
"Counsel," Judge Henderson’s voice echoed down the quiet hallway. "I've just reviewed the emergency petition filed by Whitmore Holdings, as well as the supplemental filings submitted by the Cook County State's Attorney's office ten minutes ago."
Barbara stepped forward, her composure miraculously half-recovered, though her hands were trembling slightly at her sides. "Your Honor, the transfer of the Grant properties was executed under valid spousal partnership guidelines—"
"It was executed using fraudulent digital credentials and a forged pre-death subsidiary rider," Judge Henderson interrupted smoothly, sliding his glasses down his nose to look directly at Barbara and her attorney. "Furthermore, the state's attorney has attached a recorded confession from Mr. Daniel Whitmore confirming systematic asset misrepresentation."
Barbara’s head snapped toward Vance, who looked equally blindsided.
"Where is Daniel?" Judge Henderson asked, looking around the hallway. "Because according to these filings, he’s currently named as a co-defendant in a federal wire fraud inquiry."
The silence in the hallway was absolute.
Barbara didn't answer. She couldn't. For the first time, her absolute control over everyone around her had evaporated into nothingness.
"The court denies Whitmore Holdings' emergency petition to seal the titles," Judge Henderson continued, handing a signed copy of the order to Marcus. "Furthermore, all commercial assets belonging to Grant Property Group are hereby restored to sole administrative control of Ms. Olivia Grant, effective immediately pending full forensic audit."
Marcus took the document, his lips curving into a tight, satisfied smile.
"Thank you, Your Honor," I said clearly.

Judge Henderson nodded, then turned back toward his office. "One more thing, Ms. Grant. Mr. Daniel Whitmore is currently waiting in the courthouse lobby downstairs. He asked to speak with you before the federal marshals arrive to serve the subpoena."
