Chapter 4 - Landing in Hostile Territory

Chiến dịch 15

Flight 2174 touched down at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport with a heavy thud of rubber on tarmac.

Outside the cabin windows, rain streaked across the glass in relentless gray sheets. The first-class passengers began gathering their belongings as the aircraft docked at Gate B12.

Evan stood smoothly, retrieved his leather suitcase from the overhead bin, and adjusted his coat. He did not look back at seat 4C as he exited through the jet bridge, moving with the quiet efficiency of a man whose day was structured down to the second.

Behind him, Darla followed at a distance. Her haughtiness was gone, replaced by a tense, hyper-alert focus. She had reapplied her lipstick, pulled her blonde hair back into a tight chignon, and put on dark sunglasses, though the disguise did little to hide her trembling hands.

As Evan emerged into the bustling terminal, a voice called out from the edge of the secure exit.

“Mr. Cole!”

Waiting near the moving walkway stood Richard Whitmore.

At fifty-eight, Richard was broad-shouldered, with silver hair and an expensive camel-hair coat. But his posture was defensive, his face flushed red beneath the harsh terminal lights. Flanking him were two men in dark suits—private security guards from the logistics firm’s corporate office.

Evan stopped, resting one hand on the handle of his rolling suitcase. “Mr. Whitmore. I wasn't expecting an escort.”

Richard stepped forward, extending a hand that Evan deliberately ignored. Richard’s jaw twitched, pulling his hand back with an awkward clearing of his throat.

“I thought it best to greet you personally, Evan,” Richard said, his voice forced and hearty, though his eyes darted nervously. “To ensure your transition to our headquarters is seamless. My car is waiting downstairs.”

Before Evan could answer, the click of heels echoed on the tile. Darla stepped out from behind the passenger line, her dark glasses pushed to the top of her head.

Richard’s face hardened the instant he saw his wife. He grabbed her upper arm, pulling her slightly aside with a grip that was far too tight to be affectionate. “What the hell did you do on that plane?” he hissed under his breath. “The video is all over social media! Our legal counsel called me before the wheels even touched down!”

“Let go of my arm, Richard,” Darla said, her voice eerily calm.

Richard didn't release her. “You stupid woman. You insulted the one man who holds the promissory notes on our entire estate! Do you have any idea what kind of leverage you just handed him?”

“Take your hand off her, Richard.”

The command didn't come from Darla. It came from Evan Cole.

Evan had taken two slow steps toward them, his presence instantly dominating the concourse. Several passing travelers stopped, recognizing the trio from the viral video that had already accumulated over two million views on TikTok and X during the two-hour flight.

Richard hesitated, then released Darla’s arm, smoothing his coat with an arrogant smirk that masked his panic. “This is a private family matter, Cole. It has nothing to do with the board meeting.”

“Everything concerning Whitmore Logistics is my matter as of five o’clock yesterday,” Evan replied coldly. “And we are not taking your car. My transport is already waiting at the curb.”

“Now see here, Cole,” Richard sneered, stepping closer, his private guards shifting into position behind him. “You might own the majority equity on paper, but you don't understand how this town works. The board members are my friends. The warehouse union bosses answer to me. You think you can walk into my boardroom in two hours and dictate terms? You’re an outsider.”

Evan looked Richard up and down, unimpressed. “Your friends on the board have already received digital copies of your offshore transactions, Richard. And the union bosses? They’ll be very interested to hear where their pension reserve fund disappeared to last Thursday.”

Richard’s face turned an ugly shade of purple. “You have no proof of that!”

“He does,” Darla said clearly.

Richard whipped around to stare at his wife. “What did you say?”

Darla reached into her designer bag, pulled out a sleek silver flash drive, and held it out toward Evan Cole.

“This contains the administrator logs for Richard’s private server,” Darla said, looking straight into her husband’s stunned eyes. “Including the foreign transfer authorizations he had me sign under false pretenses. He didn't just borrow money, Mr. Cole. He scheduled another wire for three million dollars to clear at midnight tonight—right before he planned to board a private flight to Belize.”
