Chapter 6 - The Paper Fortress

The rain was coming down in blinding sheets as Olivia and I stumbled down the back patio steps into the driveway.
Every muscle in my abdomen ached from the violent exertion of swinging the mallet, but the adrenaline surging through my blood acted like liquid armor. Behind us, muffled through the heavy walls of the Oakridge house, we could still hear Daniel’s muffled screams of rage and pain echoing into the dark.
"Where do we go?" Olivia cried, her teeth chattering so violently she could barely articulate the words. She was clutching Daniel’s heavy leather satchel against her chest like a newborn child. "He has friends everywhere, Emma. The chief of staff at St. Jude's plays golf with him every Sunday. The county coroner is his former professor!"
"We don't go to St. Jude's, and we don't go to the county precinct," I said, pulling out Dr. Morgan’s burner phone as we reached the curb.
I dialed Dr. Morgan's emergency number. She picked up on the first ring.
"Emma? Are you two safe?"
"We have the files," I gasped, wiping rain from my eyes. "All of them. The surrogacy contracts, the embryology harvest logs, the drugging protocols. Daniel came after us. He had a syringe. I... I broke his knee with his surgical mallet."
A brief pause hung on the line. Then Dr. Morgan let out a slow, sharp breath.
"Good," she said, without an ounce of hesitation. "Listen to me very carefully. Do not take an Uber or a cab. Daniel can subpoena digital transit logs through his legal contacts within hours. Walk two blocks south to the public library parking lot on Elm. My husband, Robert, is waiting in a dark blue Volvo wagon. He is a senior partner at Mercer & Vance—federal civil rights and medical malpractice."
"Mercer & Vance?" Olivia blurted out, her eyes widening. "Wait... Vance?"
"Yes, Olivia," Dr. Morgan replied gently through the speaker. "Robert Vance is your second cousin. When you disappeared from the residency program three months ago, your family thought you had suffered a breakdown because of the fake emails Daniel sent from your account. Claire Morgan called Robert the second you walked into my clinic today."
A strangled sob tore from Olivia’s throat. The realization that she hadn't been entirely abandoned, that Daniel had spent months intercepting her family's communications, shattered the last remnants of her Stockholm syndrome.
Five minutes later, we were in the back of Robert Vance’s Volvo, wrapped in wool blankets, the heater blasting warm air over our soaked clothes.
Robert was a silver-haired man in his late fifties with eyes like flint. He didn't ask questions. He simply checked his rearview mirror, locked the doors, and drove us directly into the underground parking garage of a secure high-rise in downtown Philadelphia—the law offices of Mercer & Vance.
By midnight, the conference room on the twenty-fourth floor looked like a command center for a federal indictment.
Spread across the twenty-foot glass conference table were hundreds of photocopied pages from Daniel’s satchel. Three senior paralegals were scanning every document into a cloud server protected by triple-encryption protocols, while Dr. Morgan sat beside me, periodically monitoring my fetal heart tones with a portable Doppler.
*Thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump.*
The sound of my son’s heartbeat filled the room—steady, strong, and defiant.
Then Dr. Morgan moved the wand to Olivia’s abdomen.
*Thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump.*
A slightly faster, lighter cadence. My biological daughter. Growing inside a woman Daniel had tried to turn into a disposable vessel.
Olivia reached across the table and took my hand. Her fingers were warm now. For the first time, we didn't look at each other as rivals or victims. We looked at each other as mothers sharing the same sacred, stolen blood.
"Here is the scope of what we're looking at," Robert Vance said, dropping a thick legal summary in front of us. He looked pale, his professional detachment cracked by absolute disgust. "Daniel wasn't acting alone. He was running an off-the-books reproductive ring for ultra-wealthy clients who wanted 'genetically elite' infants without regulatory oversight."
I stared at him. "What?"
"Daniel used your harvested eggs, Emma, because your family medical lineage is immaculate—zero genetic markers for hereditary cancers, cardiac issues, or cognitive decline," Robert explained, tapping a financial ledger found in the bottom of the satchel. "He told these private buyers that the embryos were sourced from an anonymous European donor program. He was charging four hundred and fifty thousand dollars per child. He used Olivia, and the other seven residents he groomed, as free gestational carriers, promising them marriage or professional advancement while planning to seize the infants under fabricated custody waivers."
"And our baby?" Olivia whispered, her voice trembling. "Why was he keeping our baby?"
Robert looked at me with deep sorrow. "Because his primary client—a billionaire pharmaceutical executive in Switzerland—demanded a matched set of male and female twins from the same genetic mother. Daniel couldn't produce the male twin through his surrogate program. So, when Emma naturally conceived a male child three months ago... he saw his final, eight-figure payout."
The sheer depravity of it knocked the breath from my lungs.
Daniel hadn't wanted a family. He hadn't even wanted heirs. He was running a human manufacturing operation, and our unborn children were his final deliverables.
Suddenly, the conference room door opened. Robert’s junior partner rushed in, holding a freshly printed document from the county court portal.
"Robert," the associate said breathlessly. "We have a problem. An emergency ex-parte motion was just granted thirty minutes ago by Judge Callahan."
Robert jumped to his feet. "Callahan? That corrupt bastard is on the St. Jude’s foundation board!"
"What does it say?" I demanded, my heart plummeting into my stomach.
The associate looked at me with sickening pity.

"Dr. Daniel Bennett was admitted to St. Jude’s emergency department two hours ago with a severely fractured patella. He filed an emergency criminal complaint alleging aggravated domestic assault against you, Emma. And Judge Callahan just issued an immediate custody and protective custody warrant... remanding you to the psychiatric wing of St. Jude’s for immediate involuntary induction to protect the child from maternal violence."
